That should get you started but it is not ideal :-)

Try finding the orion nebula and andromeda galaxy, h and chi persei starclusters with the 20mm.

4mm is a bit much for this telescope (700:4=175x magnification, the image gets too dark and blurry) and the cheap 4mm have a short eye relief and narrow field of view, but you should be able to see the strongest cloud bands of Jupiter, Saturn when it's visible again (morning here).

Check the positions of the Planets in Stellarium. Try to remember in which direction they will appear at a specific time. Jupiter will be noticeable as it is one of the brightest "stars" visible.

If you read the reviews at http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Northstar-Talking-Reflector-Telescope/dp/B0091KJW9A/ref=pd_sim_sbs_p_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=14QWT6EFSB31CFM2F755 you will notice the quality is not that good. With a bit of tinkering and better eyepiece it can be a neat small telescope...

But a 10-30 dollar eyepiece will not make the other issues go away. Before you buy one or two eyepieces consider buying another scope, as starting at 70 dollars you can get a 114/900 (4.5") telescope with accessories.

With the 76-700 telescope a 6mm eyepiece may be the best choice. As a rule of thumb, the maximum magnification should not exceed double the aperture, so 76mm -> 152x. A 6mm results in 117x (=700:6), so planets will still be small but visible.

Cheap Hyugens eyepieces have a small field of view and short eye relief, are very cheap though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seben-Okular-H-6mm-Bewahrte-Qualitat-31-7mm-1-25-/200644393001?pt=DE_Foto_Camcorder_Okulare&hash=item2eb7567829

Plössl have a bit larger field, are well corrected (low distortion/chromatic errors) but under 10/6mm the eye relief is too short to use comfortable. www.ebay.com/itm/1-25-Plossl-Eyepiece-6mm-/111505215603?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_&hash=item19f63a9073

Best budget eyepiece, works well on a future telescope as well. Modified Plössl with a large wide angle view, longer eye relief, and with a bit of tinkering you can change the distance (http://blog.pixelgiraffe.com/?p=820) of the bottom element to increase magnification. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-25-66-deg-Enhanced-Wide-Angle-Eyepiece-6mm-EWA-Ultrawide-/111448482773?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19f2d8e3d5
(or china, http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-1-25-31-7mm-66-deg-Wide-Angle-Eyepiece-Lens-Ultrawide-6mm-Multi-coated-for/32256042652.html - on sale for 9hrs)

The "gold line" are available in 20mm too, offering a wider field of view, or a 32mm Plössl. Starting at 20-30 bucks.

A 15mm Plössl could complete your eyepiece choice, so you have a better set with something in the low-mid-high range.

But to get started use what you have :-) And buy the Book turn left at orion.

Well, a love for Dr Stone is a love for science. I don't know how old your brother is, but when I was a kid in the 90's science kits were way more common. I've seen some in Walmart and there's this $5 store called 5 below that has some but I'll look on Amazon and see what relevant kits I can find.

here's a telescope for $33. Senku's thing is space. Space is awesome. You may also consider seeing if your local college has a telescope, I was surprised to find out that mine does and it's open to the public!

Here's a crystal growing kit. Chrome loves rocks.

Here's a microscope and here's the one I lusted after after I saw one on TechTV Screensavers $18 so cheap now! Tempting...

Electronics kit!! I had one of these! My parents threw it away because they said I was obsessive about it.. now I watch Big Clive tear apart garden lights... Senku make a radio too, which I think you can make a crystal AM radio with this kit if I remember correctly.

My daughter loves space and wants to be a space scientist when she grows up. I've bought her several books on space, which we've read through together, as well installed constellation apps so that we can look at the stars and figure out what's what (because I know little about it). Any question she has about anything, I answer. If I don't know the answer, we google it together and learn about it. We like to watch documentaries together, including ones about animals and space, and shows like How It's Made and How Stuff Works. I encourage her to get curious and learn, which pays off with how much she loves school.

do you have a planetarium nearby? those are always fun.

u/fustercluck · 1 pointr/DIY

It almost sounds like you might want a small, inexpensive version of a planetarium projector.

Not that a toy would do the job over 3000 sq ft, but...http://www.amazon.com/NSI-Room-Planetarium-and-Projector/dp/B00548T0AY

What planets can I see with this telescope?

u/HenryV1598 · 2 pointsr/telescopes

I wasn't familiar with this scope, so I looked it up... Found this glowing review on Amazon.

Yeah, to call Craigslist a crap shoot is generous. I've seen a few great deals on there (and got one myself), as well as some serious stinkers. There's a guy in my area (Houston area) trying to sell a partly-disassembled Meade 10" SCT with a fogged corrector plate (probably ruined) and no tripod for $800. In the post he talks about replacing the corrector plate, assuming it's flat glass. I actually contacted him to let him know it's not and that he should sell the scope for parts... but the add is still up. I pitty the poor sap that ends up buying it.
