I would like to learn German. Mostly because my daughter is 9 and understands it more than I do and I'd like to help her learn it a bit more. Her grandfather on her dad's side is from Germany and he only speaks Deutsch to her. Plus when her great grandma visits, she doesnt speak any English and I've stupidly smiled and nodded only to find out later on she was actually telling me that i have nice boobs but my stomach sticks out further and that she hated my dress.

Back in high school we had a choice to learn spanish or german. I wanted German and my mom wouldn't let me she said I would never need it. thanks mom

this set looks like it would be a good place to start learning

yep i chose du hast as the song, though Ive always preferred the beatles song she loves you in German

and funny german thing, can i edit later? im at work and will have to look later :)

ughhh and chocolate from Germany is the best i wish i had some right now!

I have this book and it is extremely useful. My only criticism is that it stops at a certain level of grammar.

I also have Italian Grammar by Alwena Lamping which is more comprehensive, but doesn't have enough comparative examples.

I'd love a book that 'talked me through' the principles in a conversational way - like Michel Thomas does in his spoken classes.

If you are looking for free courses, I'd recommend Alphadictionary and LearnRussianRT. However, if you need a more in-depth experience and are ready to spend a bit of money, you can check out LinguaLift, Living Language Russian, or Complete Russian: The Basics. There are also YT channels that should help you learn Russian faster.

The idea is better than the text, though, unfortunately - I started to read one of these, I forget which, a while ago but stopped ... still the idea is great - thanks for commenting!

I had a similar problem with the "Japanese for Busy People" series, which I found to be dead boring.

When I was a complete beginner, I found this book to be really useful and interesting: https://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Verbs-Saying-What-Mean/dp/4938236923/

Japanese verbs convey even more information than verbs in English, so by focusing mostly on the verbs (though the book also goes over some particles), you really learn a lot.

I would supplement that book with this dictionary of Japanese particles: https://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-Japanese-Particles-Sue-Kawashima/dp/156836542X/

And possible the "Japanese the Manga Way" program if you want additional practice with dialogues and vocab.

When you finish the verb book I linked you to, I would recommend jumping off the deep end and start consuming Japanese music, movies/dramas/anime, and reading stuff as soon as possible, looking up any words you don't know in a dictionary. It will be difficult and overwhelming at first, but

  1. You will learn quickly, and

  2. Grammar-wise, you will have had a very good start if you use the book I recommended.

I see little reason to be studying fake, made-up dialogue when you get to an intermediate level. Our ultimate goal is to learn real Japanese, so I'm a firm believer in immersion sooner rather than later.

    I hope that helps.

Are you talking about the Spoken World Series?
(Like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Spoken-World-Complete-Beginners-Language/dp/1400023483/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395191474&sr=8-1&keywords=living+language+spoken+world+korean)

They come with a book and 6 CDs.

If so, I have the Swahili, Korean and Hindi ones.

Or spend it marketing to new potential clients. I've been reading this and attempting cold-calls as it recommends – very low expected rate of response, but persistence pays off:
