    Features:
  • Note: The Nvme SSD only work for Mac OS HiSierra.
  • Note: The adapter only work for M-key SSD, cannot work for B-key or B/M-key socket.
  • This adapter allows you to replace the original proprietary SSD on your laptop with a non-proprietary SSD of your choice. This is a much cheaper option than replacing the entire laptop or buying another propriety SSD!
  • Please note: Not all M.2 SSDs are compatible with Apple laptops. Please ensure you have a compatible SSD before purchasing!
  • In order to use an NVMe drive you must update to at least 10.13 High Sierra before upgrading the SSD as the computer's firmware needs to be updated first. Your SSD will not work without updating first.

The 2014 mini doesn’t have two internal 2.5” drive bays...just one. You could use the original HDD as external storage, or keep it installed and add on a blade SSD by first buying the blade SSD cable here or somewhere else, and then buying an apple blade ssd or a standard pcie nvme ssd like the Samsung 970 Evo and an apple blade connector to m.2 adapter like this one .

Sounds good, glad everything worked out.
Even with a value drive like the WD Green SSD you should still get somewhere in the neighborhood of 450MB/s read and 250MB/s write which isn't high enough to be affected by a USB 3 enclosure unless you purchased something really bargain basement. The no-name (Inland really) USB 3 enclosure I have can do up to about 550MB/s before it starts impacting performance and it was around $8 or something over a year ago. If you are getting poor write speeds with the Green (using CrystalDiskMark or AS SSD), be sure to upgrade the firmware since some of the early WD Green firmware versions had really bad write performance.

Good luck!

PS - Depending on what Macbook Air she has, you could potentially use something like this with a stock NVMe drive (Evo 960 or whatever) to upgrade the internal storage at a fraction of the cost of an OWC drive.

Performance should be pretty damn fast at something like 1500MB/s read/write based on customer reviews.
To be fair though, you do have to make an OSX bootable USB before installing the new drive with internal adapter, format the drive via disk utility on the USB, and then you can install OSX on the new setup. Still....pretty sweet.

Try the original and make sure it works.
You can make a Linux usb and boot to that and see if the new ssd is detected then. You can also open terminal and see if a drive is detected. I don’t remember the specific command but you can google. Though it’s unlikely to give you a different answer than disk utility.

I personally use a Samsung evo 970 ssd and an adapter. I’ve never had any issues with it on mine and I’ve used it on dozens of customers MacBooks. Whatver you use hope everything gets sorted out.

Not necessarily. You could get an adapter (it only lists 0A2 SSDs, but 0A2 and 0A3 appear to be cross compatible). Or you could sell it on eBay.
