I have a book that's nothing but these kinds of illustrations (I'm actually pretty certain this image is from the same book). Every one in it is the same case where the artist had never seen the animal and was working off a basic description.
I can't remember the name of it, but when I get home I'll find it and edit it in here if anyone is interested. It's a pretty entertaining book to flip through.
