It's a cool idea. The toughest thing to wrangle will be the lighting. Gem jars are a common way to display small specimens and keep them from getting lost. However, even against a white background with bright overhead lights, some specimens are a bit too dark to see properly. F'rinstance, I have a fairly large faceted Ekanite which has a lovely deep forest green color in sunlight, but in a box it essentially just looks black. I suspect lighting will be what makes or breaks your build.

If you have a DIY bent, you could probably make a more eyecatching and engaging display with something like a pickup grabber (or something with similar function) for the cut stone, next to the rough stone displayed in a caliper stand. An "open air" design may help with the lighting, although you'd need to make sure that the background behind your display isn't distracting.

Also, you might want a loupe or magnifying glass handy for magnification.
