I love Scotland, I've been a ton of times with my family over the years, and this time was probably the most fun yet! We camped which has its own charms... but overall I loved it.

Edinburgh: it was my first time there so I have no tips really except make sure you wander and explore a lot! The place is huge and yet every street seems to have its own charm, especially up the hill away from the main street (where the high street stores are).

Skye: I've been to Skye and Mull before, they're quite similar as islands. If you like hiking and activities then try to go for a day hike and maybe even pony trekking because that's really a great way to get near the nature. If you like wildlife, ask locals about where to see otters/sea eagles/golden eagles/deer and then try to go there. For otters, evenings in a place away from cars and near a sea loch are just amazing because you can see the animals hunting really close to you! Some of my best memories are of watching for otters, even from the car with a picnic.

Glencoe/Lomond: Maybe you know about midges already, but they're tiny mosquitoes which frequent Loch Lomond in particular, they swarm all over near water and the bites can be quite itchy. Dealing with them isn't so bad, but definitely pick up some Avon Skin So Soft Oil. Sounds crazy but the locals and fishermen swear by it to keep midges and mosquitoes away, just check the amazon reviews. We used this and it worked super well at keeping midges away.

Other than that I think my favourite thing about rural Scotland is just being away from cities, and in nature, and meeting local people. Everyone is very kind, as a general rule. I hope you have a good time!

There has been rumours that the recipe had changed about 2013 and no longer was as good. Don't know if that's true but all the latest 2016 amazon reviews seem to say it works great:

Stuff is excellent at keeping the midges away and smells good too, unlike actual repellents.
