Yeah, that should be all you need. I have a similar HBA that I just flashed to IT mode and it runs fine. And yes two of those cables but power for the backplane will be supplied by 4 or 5 Molex connectors.

As for speed, I think with the expander you're going to be limited by the SAS bandwidth which when split across 24 drives seems to be about 400MBps per drive. So if you're filling the system up with SSDs, you might hit a bottle neck but with hard drives you'll be fine.

Can't remember if the back plane even supports more connections than the two so you might be limited in that way regardless unless you directly wired each drive with something like the original HBA you linked.

yea I think a good amount of people on here including myself use this HBA

amazon has em and there's lot's of tutorials if you do some gooling...
