I'm old school and log my miles by writing. There really aren't any tips, it's really as simple as just keeping track of how many miles from when you start to when you stop. The logs I use are below, you can get one at Office Depot or Staples as well for a couple bucks more. The only advice I have is to diligently keep mileage records, they are huge when you file your tax returns.

Edit: I do the standard deduction instead of itemized deductions so I don't keep receipts, just track mileage.
