It's not a classic but the trilogy of Africanus, el hijo del cónsul by Santiago Posteguillo it's great, I've read it at least 5 times.
It's a historical fiction based on the Roman Republic and the second Punic War. It tells the real history of Scipio Africanus the Elder, the only general that defeated Anibal and the conqueror of the Iberian Peninsula.
Another trilogy by the same autor tells the real history of Trajan, the first Roman Emperor born in Spain.
Both are novelizations of history, but they're pretty accurate and very good in my opinion, he may enjoy them.
