Just so you guys are aware:

IMO there's not much reason to buy the K7xx in the US, since you can get the K712 shipped from AmazonUK/AmazonFR for about ~$215. It looks expensive on the website but it removes the VAT at checkout, giving you a huge discount.

I use AKG 712s, and I really love them, I probably use them more than my monitors now to be honest!

They're rather flat, so it's not going to be great for casual listening if you love super heavy sub. The stereo field is amazing. Like, I don't know any better headphones for that under $500. Granted I only tried 5-6 pairs in this price range, I'm 100% glad I choose these, and I think if for some reason I couldn't get these, my next option would be the Sennheiser 650s.

u/OverExclamated · 3 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

Headphones.

A very good option for the types of games you play are the WS1100is. That's a pretty good price for them right now.

K702 is another option, or K712 if you wanna go big.

Those look like AKG reference studio headphones. They range from $150 to $1500 depending on the model.

I have these and they look almost identical.
http://amzn.com/B00DCXWXEI

Edit: He has the identical setup I do. He has a modmic attached on his monitor which can clip onto a mount you attach on the 'phones.

u/EliHood · 2 pointsr/edmproduction

>I’d recommend getting a Sennheiser HD280PRO because they are pretty flat and only $100 which is cheap for good quality studio headphones.

As someone who owned the sennheisers for years, don't get them. The highs on it, are unreliable.

If your going to produce get good headphones or studio monitors, bottom line.

get this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DCXWXEI/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=A24GENDIDV9018&psc=1

instead.

Also on amazon.it the price of both K702 and K712 is very good: 129€ for the first one and 229€ for the second one, but the K712 is not sold by Amazon.

u/Owchy · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Awesome stuff, brother. Love the cans! Hope you get a decent DAC/AMP in the coming months to get that fantastic sound.

My wife just bought me some AKG K712s for Christmas and it's been a blast using them.

u/QuipA · 2 pointsr/headphones

well the K7XX is only $200 because of the massdrop collab, the HD6XX was $200 too.

If you want to compare the regular models in terms of pricing then you need to take the K712 / K702 65th anniversary edition.

If you already decided to make the purchase get rid of the K7XX, there is no point in owning both headphones, they simply too similar in what they do.

u/Kerry56 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Its $386 right now on Amazon.com. But even that seems way overpriced. I could have sworn they were much lower than that in the recent past.

Edit: Might have been third party price I was thinking of. It shows as $305 right now on camelcamelcamel, but its from one of those less reliable sites. Don't think I'd buy from them.

u/prymortal69 · 2 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

Monolith M1060, K712, HD660s (Secondhand), DT1990 (secondhand) come to mind. I'm leaning towards the M1060 as top recommendation taking all that into account, but the build might seem "cheap" to you, I'll link them so you can see.

u/razorpakk · 2 pointsr/headphones

lol you guys are looking in the wrong places.

Get it brand new from Amazon.co.uk. Even with shipping you save money (also considering you drop the VAT).

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-K712PRO-Reference-Studio-Headphone/dp/B00DCXWXEI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480371919&sr=8-1&keywords=712

This is also a good reason to forget about the K7XX on Massdrop. At least someone can benefit from Brexit...

By the way you need a decent amp for those (just got mine a few days ago).

I'm found ya a couple options for ya.

Planar Magnetic Headphones aka "special driver headphones"

Monoprice M1060s Perfectly fine stock, maybe a change of earpads if you're looking for something a little "more" https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-116050-Monolith-Magnetic-Headphones/dp/B01N32N5DD

Modhouse Argon Mk3s These are specially modded headphones that give you an option for choice of headband material and earpad material (sheep leather is soft man) http://www.modhouseaudio.com/argon-mk3/zimu3wz0oyxlavnprki2jovso6c31v

Dynamic Open Headphones aka, "normal headphones"

AKG K712 Pros Very accurate, lots of soundstage, plenty of bass You may have to get a used pair as prices are on the rise https://www.amazon.com/AKG-Pro-Audio-Reference-Headphones/dp/B00DCXWXEI

Philips X2/27 Almost the same as the 712s, a little more narrow of a soundstage and "possibly" less accurate Debatably less comf (comparatively speaking) Again, you'll need to get them used but they're cheaper used than 712s https://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2-27-Fidelio-Headphone/dp/B00O2Y2MZG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522866842&sr=8-2&keywords=philips+x2

Audio Technica ATH AD series Very accurate, good soundstage, amazing treble, but definitely bass light. It's an entire series of headphones and each model up adds a slight bump in quality overall, used or otherwise https://www.amazon.com/Technica-Audiophile-ATH-AD1000X-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S330O8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522866903&sr=8-3&keywords=ATH+AD

Dynamic Closed Headphones

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Plenty of soundstage, treble is there, and BASS https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-770-PRO-Studio-Headphone/dp/B0006NL5SM/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522866927&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=beyerdynamic+dt770&psc=1

AKG K553 Pros Accurate, excellent mids, lacks soundstage but remarkably good build https://www.amazon.com/AKG-3280H00100-K-553-Pro/dp/B00X3MT7F6/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522866966&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=AKG+K550+Pros

Shure SRH840 Hesitant to put this on the list as this is basically how to perform studio monitoring Super Neutral, accurate as it gets almost, not a huge player in the soundstage game. You'll need new earpads for particularly long sessions of use https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002DP8IEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522867035&sr=8-1&keywords=Shure+SRH840

And finally the Koss KSC75s get a pair, no exceptions. They are not a replacement for ANY of the other options on this list as they're closer to earbuds than headphones, but the amount of sound quality you get for their 15 dollar price point you should already own a pair https://www.amazon.com/Koss-KSC75-Portable-Stereophone-Headphones/dp/B0006B486K/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1522867066&sr=8-1&keywords=koss+ksc+75

A few of these may be hard to drive on their own and may need a headphone amp or dac/amp combo to run properly and if you're not at ease with that right now there are always options.

Edit: removed accidental affiliate links that snuck in

Upgrade from Astro A50's and Audio Technica ATH M50xBL's. Mod Mic and Schiit Stack 2 come monday!

These things fucking kick ass, games and music both sound amazing.

K712 €208: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00DCXWXEI/ (more expensive than .co.uk though)

u/FranklynFrankers · 1 pointr/PS4

Ah right.

You mentioned the AKG 612, and the 712 set seem affordable. Would you say this is a legitimate option going forward?

/u/ext23 mentioned the Philips Fidelio X2, which seem to come highly recommended, which gives another avenue.

Thanks

AKG Q701

I got them recently. My first audiophile-grade headphones. The soundstage is to die for. They almost give the HD800 a run for their money when it comes to soundstage. They are really neutral, with a detailed bass (but in low quantity), decent midrange and great treble extension (both in quantity and quality). They are comfortable (at least for me) and built well. They can run off of computers or phones (you'll have to max out the volumes though) but they really shine when amped.

An alternative you could consider:

Phillips SHP9500

I've had them for quite some time now. While the AKG is great for critical and Hi-Fi listening, it is not that great for using for long periods of time like 3+ hours at a stretch. That's where these come in. These are the most comfortable pair of headphones I have ever put on my head (and I have put quite a few pairs on). They feel basically weightless on my head, and I can keep these on my head for hours (I think 14 hours is my record). Really cheap for what they offer, really great for Lo-Fi, but not great for Hi-Fi (not bad though). They have a good soundstage. They also have a mid-focused sound, which means that the vocals will be separated from the rest of the track and will take center stage, which is essential for movies. I would really recommend these. They went out of the market for a while but are back now.

Good luck with your purchase!

I'm looking to invest in some really good open can headphones in this price range, specifically this model. I'm going to be listening mostly to music through my computer, phone, Ipod(hip-hop/trap/rock/alternative/ambient/glitchhop) and all other media. I will absolutely plan on buying a amp soon, after I gather enough money to do so. What I was hoping to question is whether buying headphones of this quality and price range is justified for what I plan on doing with them. If so, what other models are out there can you guys recommend me? or should I purchase these headphones?

I've been looking at quite a few things while I was away from my computer.

I'm leaning towards a Modi 2 Uber (toslink for my PS4 audio) combined with a Magni 2.

My main concern is shitty drivers - I want to bypass any Creative/Asus drivers where possible. The Schiit drivers are relatively simple and well-maintained hopefully.

Secondly it appears that I may start using headphones more, however I will still want speakers as an option as well.

So I'm turned on by the Schiit stack idea, however I have some questions.

  1. The Magni 2 Uber comes with 'pre-amp outputs' whatever they are. Does this allow me to link the Magni to speakers? I would almost certainly be buying pretty decent self-powered ones. I saw the JBL LSR305s being recommended in another thread. Do I need another unit to link the Magni to powered speakers? Or can I just hook them up? If so, does the Magni possess some kind of switching to allow me to switch between headphones and speakers?

  2. Gaming on the Modi/Magni stack doesn't have any surround sound that would be created by a comparable sound card (Sound Blaster ZX for example), so does this make it a lot worse for gaming? I'm not a Counter-Strike professional or anything so I'm not terribly concerned about lack of surround audio, but I do want a good aural experience in FPS games like the recent Prey for example. I just don't particularly want a 'gaming-only' setup, and as I've explained before I detest the driver issues that come with Creative/Asus sound cards.

  3. What headphones? I was looking at the AKG K702 and the AKG K712 Pro they look pretty good and Mad Lust Envy rated them quite well but I wonder if it's not worth spending a bit more cash to get Sennheisers... he rates them better than Sennheisers if anything though? The HD 650 is about 150 dollars more than the K12 Pro sooo....
