Stay away from Bizonbox as they are way overpriced. You can run the eGPU intended Akitio Node via an Apple TB2 to TB3 adapter on TB2 Macs, and that works as you can see on this list here. The box and the adapter cost less than the Bizon Box 2S. Then you just buy pretty much any video card you want and put it into the enclosure.

I'm using a Akitio Node - Thunderbolt3 eGPU which you can get from Amazon here. I'm messing with the High Sierra beta so I ordered an AMD RX 580 to use with it. I'll have the same setup that the 9to5 Mac folks have when it arrives, so I'm pretty sure it will work.

  1. Small form factor pc is an option, maybe buy a handle
  2. external graphics card?

  3. Surface book 2 has a 6gb graphics card
  4. You can pickup an r7000 or similar, install DD-WRT and setup client wireless mode to pull free wifi while still having a local network

    2. This also gives you USB3 for a custom nas/server
  5. There are actual unlimited mobile internet plans from 80 ~ 180 depending on which network you go through.
  6. You should be able to HTPC and game with a controller pretty easy, but if you like the mouse and keyboard it might be a bit more tough

\^ $200 I've bought one of these and it worked

https://smile.amazon.com/ZOTAC-GeForce-Graphics-IceStorm-ZT-T20600D-10M/dp/B07MHR1Z8H/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2809LZNVAFD1J&keywords=rtx+2060+super&qid=1567402305&s=gateway&sprefix=rtx+2060+s%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-4

\^ 2060 super can be found at $360 and performs as well as a gtx1080 with added features such as ray tracing tensor cores and thunderbolt out for single cable VR

Buying anything less than this and your price to performance is gonna fall off and you'll just wish u stuck with whatever graphics are in ur laptop

After some more research, I'm not positive that will work. I don't think the ROG GL553 will support Thunderbolt.

I think you'll be fine with Radeon Pro 580 for most games and long as you're not trying to drive the display at it's native resolution and not at the highest settings. Remember that you can always look at adding an eGPU in the future:

Honestly, you might consider getting the iMac configuration with the Radeon Pro 570 and using the saved money to get this box.

Yes you can. Example.

But they're quite pricey and it's just for the box that holds the GPU. You'll have to either install your own or buy one with one included. Depending on which one you buy, they're also really not the most portable things either.

Today is your lucky day then, I guess: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKKSNTS

I briefly considered scraping my pennies and nickels ("pennies" and "5-pence?") together to buy a Thunderbolt-able Skull Canyon NUC and then strap an Akitio Node to drop in (and future-upgrade) a proper GPU.

It would cost a little more than an MITX tower but upgrading would be simpler because MOST IMPROVEMENTS WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE and all parts are super-standardized.

Decided against it only because this machine would run continuously for at least three years and I don't know how these handle obnxious thermals across time and I didn't want to deal with warrantying all that or ever RMA'ing any of it.

eGPU enclosures are really not that expensive. The one I use is the Akitio Node for $300. Put a desktop graphics card in there, and BAM!... your laptop is now a gaming machine.

There are plenty. Try searching for “thunderbolt 3 egpu” instead of “graphics amplifier.” The Node is pretty popular and only a bit expensive: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKKSNTS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Gwr1AbRNC6455
