It depends. There's times I mix with my monitors and really get in a better groove with the music I'm mixing or creating. Plus it gives me a better idea of what I can expect it to sound like at a club (using EONs). I prefer using my monitors but sometimes I use my cans (like I did last night). While it's different, I feel sometimes I can pick up small/slight differences in my mixing using my cans. Generally though, I'm more satisfied with using my monitors and just toning down the volume when working late.

edit: there are other models by xone that are just as good.

Ok well I'll just recommend the headphones I have, then. Or at least an earlier iteration of them which I've heard sounds just a bit better (I'll link both and tell you the differences). They have the same drivers as the Audio Technica ATH-m50, but in a 53mm version and in a much more robust and durable headphone. Only downside is the padding is kind of thin so it could start to be uncomfortable after a lot of hours, but for me it's not so bad that I really care. They also are kind of big, so if you have a small head just tell me and I'll recommend something else. Anyway, here's the headphones:

Original version of these cans. I've heard these sound a bit better than the second version, but they don't have a detachable cable, so if the detachability of the cable matters for you, get the second ones

See that "2" in there? These are the second. Same look and durability but with a slightly different gunmetal finish. They have a detachable cable and come with a 3.5mm (the usual connector on headphones that plugs into phones and stuff) to 1/4 inch (connector that plugs into guitar/headphone amps) adapter. The sound is apparently not as good as the XD-53, but I own these ones and love them.

I'll answer any other questions, but make sure you read this whole thing first.

For $180, you can get Allen & Heath Xone XD-53s on Amazon.. If you spin EDM, you'll never want another pair.

Seriously, these are Xone series. Xone mixers are the cleanest sounding in the world, and these headphones fucking match.

I use Xone 53-XD's as i already purchased them for music. They are super comfy and have superb sound quality. The only downside is the price. All in all i find they work great for both music and gaming. Here's a link to amazon http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Heath-Xone-Professional-Monitoring/dp/B000WA3DLG
