Yes and no.
For an average middle class white man, the best time was probably around the 70s in the United States.

Economic inequality was much lower at that time, and educational requirements for base level jobs was essentially high school.

As corporations hacked away at taxes, stagnated earning growth, and contributed to the student loan debt, the current generation has seen the mortality rate lower.

The time we live in is still incredible compared to the past but it is no longer trending upwards in terms of quality of living.

I've never heard of it, just using it as an example. I recommend the other one instead but it's not uplifting: https://www.amazon.com/America-Farewell-Tour-Chris-Hedges/dp/150115267X

Self help books are about you and what you can work on. I like the books that analyze the shit we are in politically & collectively. :) but also D:

I'd say the most controversial phenomenon in media would be the hockeystick-chart increase in media discussion of the actual literal collapse of civilization as we know it. The subject itself psychologically forces a noticeable neurotic response to quickly change the subject or plug ears and sing LA LA LA, so it only pokes its head in subtle spikes here and there.

Global recession immanent, mass extinction doesn't go unnoticed, flamboyant right-wing demagoguery worldwide, awkward jokes abound regarding (even in contemporary Netflix comedy specials) but also sincere questions and alarming declarations regarding a second American Civil War? (Show up to Ft. Sumter and try it, princess! Why Waffle House?) I listened to a celebrity comedian podcast interviewing another comedian, and the guest asks towards the beginning of the interview, "Do you kinda feel like the violin players still playing on the Titanic as it goes down?" Is it alarming that /r/Collapse has more subscribers than /r/SanFrancisco? If it is accurate "Millennials Are Killing" so many industries (golf, breakfast cereal, casual dining, department stores, luxury goods, cable TV, gyms, beer, motorcycles, the hotel industry, starter homes (real estate), larger homes (real estate), etc etc etc etc etc), will the sum total of these industries experiencing significant losses in revenue combine to have a noticeable, tangible, alarming cumulative effect on culture? There's rising popularity of the activist celebrity Greta Thunberg who goes so far as to espouse an attitude of "In any given moment, why is anyone participating in any other activity than the amelioration of immanent existential threat?" Can we affnord to busy ourselves with fidget spinners, Sunday brunch, and reality-TV gossip like nothing's wrong and all this can just keep going on as-is, indefinitely? Any gamers here happen to experience the disturbingly realistic and relevant dystopian landscape of Far Cry 5? Why are Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists writing books titled America: The Farewell Tour?

What could be more controversial than actual-Mad-Max-future?

fwiw, if I'm off-base, forgive my Sarah Connor Syndrome -- I'm often chastised for it, and maybe that criticism is valid (any reaction is sincerely appreciated, as with my concerns I appreciate feeling "heard". Don't think about a pink elephant!)
