You NEED to read the Animal Man series by Grant Morrison.
It's gotta be one of my favorite series ever. It's collected in three trades, and it plays out as Animal Man going from a second-string super hero to becoming self-aware of his own existence as a comic book character.
It was written by Morrison before he dropped way too many hallucinogens, and I think it's weird and interesting without being so far out there as to be confusing, like his more current stuff, IMO.
This series is simply amazing! I would also highly suggest picking up Grant Morrison's run of Animal Man! It's spectacular stuff too!

Introduction to Comics
How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems
Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?
Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.
Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.
Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.

You should go back and read Morrison's, Milligan's and Delano's runs. They've just starting collecting the post-Morrison stuff:
Omnibus or Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3.
Grant Morrison's Animal Man is generally considered to be the definitive run on the character. It was a part of the late 80s' British "invasion" of comics, along with Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and Neil Gaiman's Sandman. It's been discussed on /r/comicbooks before quite a few times - here's one such thread - beware a few spoilers about halfway down the page.
Check out the preview pages on Comixology (there's a See What's Inside button) to see if you dig the art, which might not be to your taste. I personally liked it.
Couple hundred? Maybe you saw the omnibus, which has the same cover as volume 1. Here's the link for volume 1 on the cheap, I definitely recommend it!
My favourite school memory is probably during elementary school. During the winter the playground would divide up into different factions, each building their own fort. For some odd reason the hot commodity that each group was after was ice and icicles. We would try to invade the other groups base and steal their icicles. We were also not above the use of subterfuge, and backstabbing. It was the Most wonderful time.
This is a book that I would read in between my classes.

Ok here I'm going to have to disagree. The best graphic novel is Watchmen, no matter what you thought of the movie. Sandman may be 2d, or even possibly 3d, or maybe even 4th or 5th, to Nexus, the collected Grant Morrison Animal Man, or even The Invisibles, which is, at the very least, one of the greatest comic book names ever.
OTOH, who needs to quibble about which is best when we can read them all?
Alright, Doom Patrol tells me all I need to know, buy him these three volumes of Animal Man:
It's just a few cents over $50 (shipped) and it'll make you look completely awesome.
or, if he has Animal Man already, you could go with theStarman Omnibus for just under $50 (shipped).
Yup. Three fantastic trade paperbacks.
