You rock. Thanks for being a shining example of someone taking the necessary time to research before diving into this hobby. Take anything I am about to type as just my opinion, but that being said I have had a lot of recent experience with the learning curve of live plants in new tanks lately. It doesn't seem like budget is an issue for you so if I say anything about saving money feel free to disregard it :) :

  1. Some may not agree with me, but I would opt for a larger heater (100w). I have found that with a higher wattage the heaters are on a lot less frequently thus extending their lifespan. I run 150w in my 20 gallons and when my heater died in my 5 gallon I threw one of of my 150s in there and had no issues whatsoever. The idea that a more powerful heater carries the risk of frying your fish is nonsense as a malfunctioning heater is a malfunctioning heater no matter the wattage. Especially since you are considering using a heat controller, this is even more of a reason to feel safe with a higher wattage heater which leads to my next point...

  2. You don't need a heat controller if you want to save $30. The internal thermostat on the adjustable heaters are pretty spot-on nowadays. Hydor makes great heaters, but recently I have had great success with Aquatop heaters (and they come with a free thermometer!). The interface for dialing in the thermostat is a bit difficult to work with at first but once you get it dialed in, these things hold temperature within 2ยฐF (and that is in the dead of winter in Seattle).

  3. Great choice on the live plants. All the ones you have listed will fare well. Seachem Flourite is nutrient rich. You do not need to supplement the substrate. That being said, I am a HUGE fan of Eco-Complete. It is extremely nutrient rich and requires zeeeeero washing. It comes ready to drop in the tank. I also find it visually appealing and find the shape of the granuals fantastic for holding rooting plants.

Edit: Continue to next comment! The numbering got all mucked up because of mulitple comments, but you get the idea I'm sure.
