Why? For the glory of Satan, of course!

Since I figured there is no need for me to do a whole upgrade cycle (CPU, MBO, RAM, GPU) until there's a new generation of CPUs out and when I can afford to switch to complete 4k and/or 144Hz setup, I decided to brighten up my GPU a bit. Best way would be a liquid cooling solution, but since those are pricey, I found a nice alternative - Arctic Cooling aftermarket thingy made specificaly for the beast that is (was) my GTX 690.

Considering the (iron) price that was paid for the GPU, I figured that it wouldn't be a bad investment to keep it a bit colder in the coming years.

After a quick two hour process that is mounting this dual helicopter younglings on my GPU I started 3D Mark, HW Monitor and EVGA PrecisionX to redo the tests conducted before the upgrade... For science! First table is with the stock GPU on, the second one is with the Accelero Twin Turbo.

OC? | GPU1 | GPU2 | Load
---|---|----|----
No | 43°C | 36°C | Idle
No | 76°C | 67°C | 3D Mark
+104/274Mhz | 43°C | 36°C | Idle
+104/274Mhz | 77°C | 69°C | 3D Mark

OC? | GPU1 | GPU2 | Load
---|---|----|----
No | 27°C | 24°C | Idle
No | 62°C | 51°C | 3D Mark
+104/274Mhz | 30°C | 26°C | Idle
+104/274Mhz | 67°C | 56°C | 3D Mark

  • Idle temperature is down to almost the ambient temperature
  • Temperature under load is down ten to fifteen degrees Celsius
  • There is no more sound of incoming vaccum cleaner invasion every time the GPU decides to cool itself down

All in all, I'd give it a 5/7.
