boardgamegeek.com is a good resource for learning about games you might want to buy or just games in general. Usually games in the top 200 are pretty good games overall.
as far as cheaper options go, Arkham Horror is thematically very similar to Eldritch Horror, but it's a card game instead of a board game and thus cheaper. They are both made by Fantasy Flight Games. It's about $40. The benefit of Arkham Horror is that it has a plethora of expansions, and therefore this is a gift that you can add to in the future if you guys really like it. HOWEVER, I'm trying to decide myself if this is something I want on my christmas list.
One final thing, Shut Up & Sit Down is a very well made youtube channel that reviews board games. I find their reviews really insightful and helpful. You can watch their Eldritch Horror review and their Arkham Horror review to gauge the differences between the games.

Amazon has matched this deal. Per the Camel, it's a pretty good deal. Looks like it was $24 back in April briefly, but that's as low as it's ever gotten.
Thanks! I'm going to pick up a second core and add another Broken Token insert; I'm hopeful the two upgraded boxes plus those "Return to" storage boxes will hold a full set.

He's referring to the card game, there is an app that handles a randomized token draw that is required in that game. Arkham Horror the board game is a whole different beast. Also, check out Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition, has an official companion app that facilitates a lot of the game but you still get to touch tokens roll dice and such.
