Gaming laptops are not very good with battery life in general. In addition, the Geforce graphics cards used in gaming laptops are not generally good for CAD work, which benefits more from Quadro cards. That said, if you want a gaming laptop that has the latest technology, the ASUS ROG G750JS-DS71 makes a fine choice. It has an i7 4700HQ processor, 16GB ram, 1TB HDD 7200RPM + 256GB SSD, around 4 hours of battery life when just browsing the Internet/general use, 1920x1080 17.3" screen, GTX 870M GPU w/ 3GB DDR5 memory, 4 USB 3.0 ports and HDMI+VGA.

The major downside to this model is the 10 pound weight. While it's extremely capable and can handle your gaming requirements quite handily, it's not very portable. If you can live with that, then you would be getting a well built machine that runs cool even while under intense gaming pressure.

If you want to go a few hundred over $2000

Major difference is the GPU..

I'll say what most people will say on here.. Just get a desktop and a cheap laptop. With that $2000, you can build a computer that will be 10 times better than the laptop.

I had a rough $2000 budget and I decided to do that.

What the fuck is their business plan? I just clicked on a random item on their page: ASUS G750JX-DB71 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

It costs 4.0147 BTC, which at this moment Google's BTC to dollar conversion says is $1893.28 USD. That same exact laptop is $1619.99 directly from Amazon

Its also the older version of the laptop, the newer, faster one (3.4 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz) is still cheaper: $1729.00

The MSI GT70 Dominator-890 would be the most powerful option, but expect it to get hot. It has the fastest graphics card on the market and one fan to cool it, so I'd suggest also getting a CM Storm SF-19 for it to use during long gaming sessions.

If you have a bit more cash to throw at it, the all around best option is the ASUS G750JZ. It never gets hot, has the highest build quality around, a fantastic keyboard, a really sleek design, and has 2 SSD's on RAID 0 for fast load times.

I actually own the last-gen graphics version of it and I had my dad get the 1 step down version, the ASUS G750JS which is the version with a GTX 870M, which is a more affordable option for you if you want quality and performance in a lower price bracket.

870m. Way better efficiency (longer battery life and less heat).

Asus makes fantastic gaming laptops.

2000$!? That seems crazy high!... I would expect a laptop with a single 870m to be no higher than 1500$ (unless you are looking at ultra portable solutions like the RAZR Blade or something).

I mean this is 1700$, WITH the dual HD and SSD option and a premium brand (Asus):

This ASUS ROG is a great choice. The 970M and 980M are not yet released however if you're willing to wait a little bit longer you can get a laptop with one.

Personally ASUS makes one of the best gaming laptops available if you don't plan to take it around with you and use it on battery. While it's rather heavy, it is very well built. It has dual fan cooling which will keep the heat low (I've heard of a few gaming laptops that end up cooking themselves).

This has a:

  • Core i7-4700HQ (3.4 GHz Turbo)
  • 16GB of RAM
  • 1TB of Storage w/ 256GB SSD
  • GeForce 870M w/ 3GB of GDDR5

You can get the 880M card, however that will be above your budget (in the 2000+ range).

Amazon link to the actual laptop. Note, it's $1389 for a refurbished model. I'm open to offers.

ASUS Republic of Gamers. Can't recommend them enough. I bought a similar one to this (not quite as good), about 18 months ago. I use it for all my gaming on the highest settings, as well as all my photo and video work. http://www.amazon.com/G750JS-DS71-17-3-inch-Gaming-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B00IEV85OU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1398021923&sr=8-4&keywords=asus+republic+of+gamers

u/PyroUnt · 2 pointsr/gaming

This one is really good for gaming.

u/arcainic · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Have you considered a power strip?

MSI GE60 bad battery life though, you won't find any laptop able to game for more than 1~2 hours no matter what, because a high quality graphics card is a battery guzzling hound.

(ROG G750)[http://www.amazon.com/G750JS-DS71-17-3-inch-Gaming-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B00IEV85OU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1406412829&sr=8-6&keywords=870M] I believe this one has slightly better battery life, however it will not matter if you're using the battery for gaming.

Both the above laptops carry a 870M, you can probably get an 880M below 2k, but the performance boost might not be worth the $400 extra.

I'm using this guy

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IEV85OU/

Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4Ghz (Turbo 3.4 GHz) Quad-core Processor
16 GB DDR3 RAM
1TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive, 256 GB Solid-State Drive
17-Inch screen, GeForce GTX 870M 3GB

I replaced the 256GB SSD with a 1TB SSD and it hums along quite nicely.

u/BrunoSG · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Here it is. Mobility is a big thing for me, also, if I were to buy what's worth 800 USD in America in my country I'd be spending at least $2000.

u/Assorted_Bits · 1 pointr/Laptop

I have an older version of this backpack which stores this laptop. The width of your laptop is a bit bigger, but the depth is smaller. See if you're able to find a shop near you which carries that bag and try it for yourself. The laptop slot is underneath the back-most zipper.

u/AdventWeed · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

This one is pretty beast - http://www.amazon.com/G750JS-DS71-17-3-inch-Gaming-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B00IEV85OU

A little more than $1,500 but worth it imo. You'll prob want to invest in a nice laptop cooler too if you are going to Liberia. I assume the barracks have AC, but you never know.

u/Anon_Logic · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'm sorry but you come across very pretentious. Not sure why you linked to a picture of your laptop instead of something useful. Like this link on amazon. Or Asus directly That's a $1,700 laptop. By comparison this build is $1,506. Here you'll see the difference in the mobile and desktop performance. And the CPU, I couldn't get an i7 that slow that's Haswell. I literally picked the cheapest that was listed for me so here's the side by side with the CPUs. Also, not sure why you'd use Fraps instead of nVidia's built in stuff. ShadowPlay has a very low FPS hit when recording, has built in FPS counter, and is free.

But here's the bottom line. Laptops, will never surpass a desktop of the same generation of parts. Laptops have less overall power to work with (power from the wall that is). Add in they have to worry about heat, physical size, etc. A desktop wins in every category there.

However, laptops win when it comes to pure mobility. While desktops can be mobile, it requires a lot of extra effort and care to do so. So the question each individual has to ask is, how important is mobility. If mobility is top on the list, then yeah go with a laptop. If performance is more important, then maybe the desktop build and a tablet is a better option (since I did save $200). And when I say mobility is key, I don't mean for convenience. I mean it should be ultimately important.

So yes, that laptop will play every game that's come out thus far, some even very well. It has specs that surpass any console for sure.

My budget is between $2,000 to $2,200

Mostly using for Gaming, but I want to use it to work from home some days as well

I’d like to be able to play games like Assassin’s Creed Origins/Odyssey and Witcher 3 at the highest settings. I love open world games, so I want a PC that can handle more demanding games that have come out and will be out in the next few years.

1080p, 60fps, max settings for a game like Witcher 3

Most importantly, I want to spend a lot on my first build so I don’t have to replace parts for a while. I currently own this laptop below and it’s not able to play more demanding games that came out after 2014. So, I figured this build would be perfect for a few years until I have to switch out some parts

OK here are the computers that are on my watch list, these have had sales in excess of 500$ off in the past if i remember correctly. and again, you can ship these to the UK for a little extra cash. I personally am looking for a 17.3 inch screen, but if you want a smaller screen (cheaper probably) tell me and ill do the research for you. The Asus is what you should be looking to buy, and if you are willing you can buy these laptops refurbished for super cheap (1000 bucks). These are the absolute best i could find after all my research, anyways, here they are: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IAACWH6/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1752VPBNI9TIU&coliid=I37JW8F0B1DLPR&psc=1

BTW let me know if you liked them and my work payed off! XD. and I know these prices are a bit premium, but they are the best mix of quality and price i could possibly find. and last note, the only problem with Asus is their absolutely terrible customer service, and whenever you buy a gaming laptop (whatever the brand) you run the risk of dysfunctional models (read reviews for yourself and decide for yourself if the computer is a safe buy)

I would look at the http://www.amazon.com/G750JS-DS71-17-3-inch-Gaming-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B00IEV85OU/ref=psdc1_t1_B00IKF2H12_B00IEV85OU G750. It has a better GPU and is under your price range. Or you could go with the G50JM which has the same specs as the msi but is 1300

u/xyexz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

I was just where you were, my budget was a little lower but I ended up going a little higher after doing TONS of research.

I had my eyes set on a Lenovo y50 which can definitely game with the GTX 860m and the price was pretty affordable, $1050 for the 1080p model, $1400 for the 4k touch model.

In the end I went with a g750js-rs1 that I was able to purchase at my local microcenter for $1600.

The amazon g750 is slightly different from the microcenter model but same chassis, cpu and gpu which is pretty much the heart of the machine. Both have two SATA slots and 4 ram slots, which is great for upgrades... everything has the ability to be removed (CPU, GPU etc.) which is nice for repairs/upgrades as well.

It's 17", 10lbs and I love every bit of it - this has been by far the best laptop I've ever owned it's got stellar cooling that is very quiet while gaming (I've tested BF4, skyrim and other games)... keyboard never heats up.

I've owned MSi laptops in the thin and light category in the past and I would urge you to stay away as they get really hot to the touch while gaming and are very loud, my msi ge40 needed a dedicated laptop fan cooler (not a college friendly solution).

Looking up reviews on the y50 on youtube they mention some slight heat but nothing major, fan noise is really good as well.

What made me switch to the Asus from the y50 was the fact that it had the 870m which is around ~20-30% faster in games and I wanted the machine to last a while.

The battery life on power saver mode with the Asus and slightly over medium brightness has been consistently 5 hours while running YouTube/WinAmp, VS 2013, SSMS and uploading files over FTP, putty sessions you name it... pretty incredible but not surprising since it has the Intel HD 4600 to switch over when not doing 3d processing.

One other note, the ASUS and the y50 both look more professional than the MSI series of laptops - not sure how much that means to you.

Good luck!

I've done the gaming laptop thing... two of them actually. The first one was an alien ware and I couldn't quite game on it because it constantly overheated and needed a laptop cooler just to function properly. It also wasn't that powerful, especially for what I paid for it.

The second was was an Asus G53 (15 inch version of their ROG series which they don't make anymore), and while the cooling setup was superior to Alienware in every way, it was bulkier because of it. Another trade-off was that the battery life was just over an hour while gaming.

The big drawback to gaming laptops are their power levels compared to desktops. The Asus G53, for example, while running great, had a Nvidia 460m and Core i7 prcoessor that barely ran any faster then a Radeon 4890 desktop video card and i7 920 prcoessor. That's right, even though the 4890 is a generation older, it ran games faster.

I still wouldn't discount gaming laptops, but to get a decent-enough performing one you're not going to get anything portable. I'd think of them as more of a sub-mini-itx form factor with a monitor attached.

If you're cool with what I said above, I'd highly recommend Asus again as being the best 'gaming' laptop out there. Here's my two picks:

ROG with 870m

ROG with 860m

If you can wait, there will be NVIDIA GTX 870M notebooks coming soon, like this ASUS.

Listen to red_wolf757, and grab a notebook equipped with a GTX 880M.

u/FriskyBeast · 1 pointr/buildapc

The battery isn't much of a problem either. When I first got my current laptop, I could take it on the go in battery saving mode and get 3 hours or so on the battery. That was fine with me. Currently, I can't unplug the laptop at all, because the battery is so shot it will only stay powered for 2 minutes even though it says it is at 100%.

The link I provided has a 5400rpm drive, but if the laptop will preform much better I would be willing to put up the cash for the model with the 870m card, 7200rpm 1TB drive and a 256GB SSD for the OS.

actually, i was looking at some more laptops, and i saw one that was $1,700 (sadly around 10 pounds) but the same cpu as the 750jz, and the same gpu as the gs70. It just does not have the ssd. http://www.amazon.com/G750JS-DS71-17-3-inch-Gaming-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B00IEV85OU/ref=psdc1_t1_B00IAACWH6_B00IEV85OU
