Something like this Asus ROG ($1280) is probably a good high-mid-range choice, with a combo SSD/HDD, 1080p IPS screen, 16GB RAM, an i7-HQ processor, and a GTX960M.

Lenovo makes good mid-range laptops, e.g., the Flex 2 ($655). Dell makes decent laptops too.

The only manufacturer I'd really stay away from is HP.

EDIT: Even if the OP is a joke, I'd totes recommend the Asus. It has enough USB ports to run a mouse, a drink cooler, and charge a breathalyzer.

This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00T7XRGGC/ref=pd_aw_sim_sbs_147_of_10?ie=UTF8&dpID=51FydyU2+ZL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_SL500_SR100,96_&refRID=1K86WHJZ97RMP9T15M18&th=1&psc=1

Sorry for the long link. I'm on mobile. It definitely works really well for general editing. I've run Premiere and Photoshop CC on it, and it works great. I would definitely recommend checking it out, and maybe others from the same series.

I wouldn't call this model of the GS60 long lasting. It comes with a GTX 850M, which is by not the best GPU out there and it will struggle with BF4 on high settings at 1080p.

You could get something better with your budget. Especially if you can upgrade the laptop with an SSD yourself (OEMs overcharge for SSDs).

You could get a laptop with a GTX 960M or even 965M.

I don't know if by "1k>" you meant over 1k, but here's a thing for $1277.

15" 1080p IPS

4k at under 1 grand will be tough. Under 1k you're looking at a 960m. The dell or Asus, take your pick.

Looks great! I think the only negative aspect of that computer I can find is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M chip. Most of the laptops I've been looking at have the newer NVIDIA GTX960M chip.

I think I may have found a great laptop here. What do you think?

Thanks for the heads up! I really like the ROG laptops but haven't gotten my hands on one yet. After a bit of searching this ROG seems to be the one I will look into.

Have you heard of any issues with Asus gaming laptops?

Hey guys, first time on this sub so my apologies if this isn't the right place to post this question, and if not please direct me to a better spot.

I'm a student on a budget and I need a recommendation for a laptop for recording/mixing (Pretty much all for Pro Tools). I have about $1500 to spend, about $300 is going to a student license for Pro Tools.

I've been a windows guy all my life, but my first choice was a Mac Book Pro, for these two reasons. 1: To to up my familiarity with the most prominent O.S. I see in studios. 2: because I've heard the compatibility on Macs is much better. In the past I have spent large amounts of time on my windows PC installing drivers, setting up interfaces and troubleshooting software, and Ideally id like this to be an on the go recording and mixing machine that's as efficient as possible.

Here's a link to the 13" inch Mac Book Pro that's in my price range (I get a student discount that will bring it to my price range) http://www.apple.com/us-hed/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MF840LL/A&step=config#

On the other hand, for that price I could purchase a pretty damn good windows laptop with considerably better specs. 15 inch screen instead of 13(!), 128GB SSD, terabyte HDD, 16 Gigs ram(that's twice as much ram), i7 quad core (2 more cores)...ect. Hardware-wise a much better deal. (EX:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T7XRGGC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER)

My question is... is the Mac worth it? All biases aside, I just want the most compatible, fluid, professional solution possible. I've had quite a few people tell me the 13-inch screen is not ideal for mixing, what's your opinion? Is there another machine in my range you would recommend? Any other aspects I may be overlooking?

Thank you for your time and your insight.

*I'm really not concerned with brand loyalty, I just want the best system, whether you love macs or hate 'em I'm really just looking for factual and experienced based advice, Thanks!

I have a quick question. Before i posted i was looking at laptops, and found the laptop below for 880 in amazon warehouse. It was over my budget, but i was wondering how it compares to your build? Is the desktop a better value? Or if you took a couple bucks more could i get a desktop with similar specs for a bit less than that laptop? Thanks in advance!

Hopefully this works. This is the amazon.com link to the product from when I purchased it in May 2015. I paid $1,020.

u/dmdtransfer · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

My max budget is nearly double that, so I'd like to get something that will last me. Are any of these laptops a better deal?

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro

MSI GE62 APACHE-002

ASUS ROG GL551JW

Looking for a laptop for Adobe suite (sharp screen with good color accuracy is a must), movies/music, and light gaming.

Again, its harder to write viruses for more limiting software.

There's a reason Macs were just Dell computer components with fancy cases at 3x the cost for many years.

Hackintoshing was easy as hell with a Dell. Why? (They were the same computer)

Why not just put OS X one any of these computers? You really think that the Mac hardware pricing is more cost effective?

http://listenthusiast.com/best-laptops-for-hackintosh/

This computer is half the price of its Mac counterpart and can run OS X quite well....
