I'm not even sure if it's possible - or feasible - to run Unity in a "cloud VM". It's surely nothing I would have tried, and I would definitely go for a PC, preferably a stationary (more bang for the bucks, better upgrade options etc.), but I can understand it if you must have a laptop; hard to drag the stationary around. :)

If your budget is max. $1.5K, there are tons of very good options out there. A quick search on Amazon.com gave me f.ex. this ASUS laptop at $1.2K + shipping. Quite good specs, and should be more than enough for Unity development.

Alternatively, it has a little brother for only $700 + shipping, which still would be a good choice, although 256GB disk might be a tad small.

Good luck!

Well, you're nearly fully right about the specs, although you could get away with a 1050Ti so here's what I recommend:

  • HP Omen 15.6"
  • Dell G7 15.6"
  • MSI GP63
  • Asus TUF

If you get the Dell or MSI, you'd probably want to upgrade the RAM ASAP because when video editing RAM is important and I personally got myself 24GB, but 16GBs are more than enough, preferably dual channel.

Budget: 1100 but willing to go over if worth

Country: USA

Screen size: Doesn't matter to me, would like 144hz but not required

Screen resolution: 1920x1080

Touch screen: No preference

Weight: No Preference

Main purpose of laptop: Gaming/Everyday student

If you will be gaming, what are the most demanding games you will play and at what settings? Apex if I do play, but mostly Dota and CS

Is battery life an issue? I'd like to have more than 3-4 hours

Other notes: So I have been doing a lot of research on the deals and such and I have a few options that I am looking at. I just compare specs to prices, I don't really understand thermal throttling and stuff like that so that is why I came here. Below are going to be links to the laptops I am thinking about in order of price low to high. If you have a better idea for a laptop in comparison to the links provided please let me know.

Dell Inspiron 2 in 1 ~700

Lenovo Legion ~900 (leaning towards this one atm)

ASUS ROG GL503 ~929

HP OMEN 15 ~1000

HP OMEN 15 Different model on woot ~1100

ASUS TUF FX 504 ~1100

ASUS ROG ~1100

My Holy grail

Here's a 3DMark Time Spy. It's similar to what I got when I did the benchmark on AC power (3906).

Unfortunately there are a number of variations I have this one, specifically (FX504GM-ES74).

TBH when I was doing research I was massively underwhelmed. I would have stuck with the Nitro 5 if it weren't for shipping with a bad battery (it had much better battery life - but I never got to benchmark it) - if you're going to be unplugged ensure you are happy with the battery expectations. My FX504 will actually drain battery on AC when it's pushed hard enough.

I'm given to understand Lenovo has the Y730 and Y530s coming out and they have a few neat features including a thermal design that doesn't look to "gamer" so you could bring it places.

The Surface Books did also get good reviews but for the performance that might be out of your price range.

To add: one thing that I like about having 16GB of memory is that I can run VMs without too much pain. If you're going to do something like dual boot or boot Linux the FX504 might not be a good choice, though, as the touchpad driver doesn't work properly right now.

Would this laptop be a good choice?

The dell is a good laptop but I want something more. I did look into the MSI you mentioned and that is a awesome laptop.

I was also looking at this laptop, and comparing this one with the MSI

I was also looking at the Acer Predator Helios, but I seen the cooling system on it and I didn’t like how the set up of that was. Amazing laptop, but the cooling was why I wouldn’t get it.

Thanks for your response!
