If you are into competitive FPS games I would highly recommend a 1080p 144Hz monitor, because with a lot of games you won't get close to 144 FPS on any higher resolutions, including 1440p.
I recently got the Samsung 27 inch curved monitor 144hz with the quantum dot and I've got to say it's really wasn't a good choice. I found myself going back to my flat Asus 144Hz monitor which performed much better and really looks just as good for the picture quality.
Here is a link to the Asus monitor ( 144Hz G-sync ) which has really served me well, would definitely buy this monitor again, on sale for $200 USD which is a great price compared to what I paid for it:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MSB4X9G
Here is a link to the more recent, expensive Samsung monitor which performs really badly, it's curved and advertised as 144 Hz freesync. Don't buy this, the monitor hardware probably isn't fast enough to handle 144 Hz which would explain the random artifacts that happen periodically on the screen. The monitor is okay if you run it at 120Hz but its really overpriced and not a great monitor:
https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/gaming/27--cfg73-gaming-monitor-with-quantum-dot-lc27fg73fqnxza/
Keep in mind you can use G-sync and Freesync if you have an Nvidia graphics card, but you can only use Freesync ( which works terribly mind you ) with an AMD graphics card.

Trust me on this one.
Believe me, WILL BE worth. Once you play at 144 you'll never want to go back to 60. At least that's my experience, and when I invite friends to my house I let them play in my monitor and they are amazed. And those monitors are not that expensive anymore:

It'll be for gaming and VR, I have this monitor https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VG248QZ-Gaming-Monitor-144Hz/dp/B07MSB4X9G/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ASUS+VG248QE&qid=1574219451&s=electronics&sr=1-3 , I don't have access to a microcenter, and I don't really know enough about overclocking to do it at the moment.

Sorry for late reply on link
Preferably something close to this. Has 1080p and 144hz for right around $200. I saw it cheaper some other places but amazon is where I usually order my stuff.
Hey man I love your build, and you seem to be able to understand my perspective being Canadian as well. After a couple of hours researching every component in your build I came up with this one: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/ezwawi/saved/8qZdmG
NOTES:
I dropped down to the 3600 because I don't think I will use the extra cores and for the price (the saved $200) and specs I think this is more up my alley.
I got 3600 memory but I changed it to the Trident Z because after comparing with Corsair I liked the RGB better (I want just a little bit of RGB so I opted for that option instead of the non RGB, otherwise I would've stuck with yours).
I chose the two pieces of storage (WD and Samsung) because they were the most recommended brands for what they were doing ALTHOUGH I don't know if (for the Samsung) the 500GB would be excessive, as I would be putting the OS on it and my game library wouldn't be very extensive (at least I don't think).
For the mobo I plan on buying the one that you selected but I also found this Gigabyte one, and I only added it so you could see and give me your opinion on it. They're the same price and I think I'm going to have to buy a wifi card regardless. Also the Gig mobo is compatible with the current power supply in the build.
I bumped up to a Gold Certified power supply because I kept reading online that I should just spend the extra couple bucks and go for gold because it's less headache.
For the case... yeah I know, it's a bit more on the expensive side. I do like how it looks however, and once Black Friday comes along I plan on buying extra fans and maybe a liquid cooler that is perhaps RGB. Right now I'm looking at this liquid cooler: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/r7x9TW/nzxt-kraken-x42-rev-2-982-cfm-liquid-cpu-cooler-rl-krx42-02 . But again I'm going to wait and just use the stock cooler, because I think that will be enough considering I won't be over clocking.
Please let me know what you think and I apologize if I changed too much for your liking. You really helped me out!
Could you give your thoughts, criticisms, suggestions? Also any recommendations for peripherals would be very very much welcome! So first thing, if I were you, I would be running a RX580 8GB at least. If you make that change, I'd recommend getting this monitor. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VG248QZ-Gaming-Monitor-144Hz/dp/B07MSB4X9G/ref=asc_df_B07MSB4X9G/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=320228665853&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4369730323604643935&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9022896&hvtargid=pla-625590878553&psc=1
ASUS VG248QZ 24” Gaming Monitor 144Hz Full HD 1080p 1ms DP HDMI DVI Eye Care
I have this monitor and was using this DP cable. I'm not really sure if its 1.3 or 1.2 but I tried using the HDMI cable from my second monitor and it worked perfectly fine on HDMI but I can only get 60 hz instead of 144hz. Today I went out and bought a new DP cable because I thought my current one was broken but I'm still getting no signal so I'm not sure what to make of that.
Which one is the better monitor?
I am running a GTX 1080 graphics card.
youre probably looking at a TN panel.
heres a few ones that are priced alright
one
two
three
(the last one is 27")
You should get 3200 16 gb ram with 3600. You can get it relativity cheap now too for around $50. As for monitor you should aim for a low price 144 hz like this one https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VG248QZ-Gaming-Monitor-144Hz/dp/B07MSB4X9G/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=asus+144hz+1ms&qid=1562830704&s=electronics&sr=1-3 Depending on your budget though and what you're using it for 60 hz will do you fine.
sorry I was confused.. why not ASUS VG248QZ. Thick bezel tho.
