I really have no idea. And as always, im sure people will say "you cant get better machines for the price bro". Ugh. Stop being sheep. Windows machines are drastically better speced out even at this price range.

I just want better hardware for ChromeOS. We should be able to beat Windows on price and quality. But they just refuse to even try. They want to take the Apple approach without being Apple. Its frustrating.

size is a big one for students. 15.6in is good, but if you have a small pack or need it to be smaller 13 inch laptops are out there. since students would be using their computer a lot to open things like word documents or spreadsheets, so you need a fast but efficient processor and a good amount of ram like maybe 8 or 16gb, like a ryzen 5 3500u.

the amd laptops are cheaper and offer similar performance to intel laptops. look for laptops with ssds, so it starts up fast and is snappy. though ssds are small in capacity unless you need to have large photoshop or 3d modeling stuff on the laptop, ssds are definately the better option for students.

look for either high quality plastic chassis or metal chassis, as these are durable and are good for taking out/putting away a lot, and are generally light as most metal laptop chassis are aluminum these days.

you should also look for laptops with a good battery life, at least around 19~14 hours. also look for USB-C charging capable laptops as a lot of phones have them nowadays, so you only have to carry one charger if your phone uses USB-C, and you can transfer files between your phone and laptop quickly if you need to.

also look for thin designs as these are easy to carry, usually lighter than textbooks and dont make you tired carrying around all day.

here are some good examples of what i just said: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-330S-15ARR-Laptop-Memory-Platinum/dp/B07HGTFTZB/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=ryzen+5+3500u+thin+light&qid=1574045426&sr=8-7 according to reviews of this, as long as you remove McAfee "antivirus" it is blazing fast

F512DA-EB55 link seems to be missing, but F512DA-EB51 is still intact.

looks good. maybe the webpage isn't ready yet. looks like an ultrabook grade since the intel version is indeed ultrabook

u/WhiteHawkGaming · 2 pointsr/feedthebeast

I use a $500 Asus Vivobook with Ryzen 3500u and I've never had problems running MC on it. I'm currently playing on the Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons pack and I'm averaging in the high 50s with some tweaking in Optifine.

Mind you these tweaks are the same I run on my much more powerful desktop so I'm not really cutting quality down.

Generally right now, you should look for a quad core processor. More specifically, an i5-8250/8265u. Also, based on my research, you do need/want a dedicated GPU to play The Sims 4 smoothly at 1080p resolution... But a dedicated GPU is outside that price range. So, I'd look for a Ryzen 5 laptop with Vega 8 integrated graphics, which is at least better than Intel's UHD 620. Here's one option, under budget if she's willing to buy "Used - Very Good": Asus Vivobook F512DA

For school in this price range I would advise you to check this laptop

laptop name | ASUS VivoBook 15
--- |----
CPU | Quad Core R5-3500U
GPU | AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics
Screen "| 15.6"" FHD IPS"
Ram | 8 GB
SSD | 128 GB
HDD | 1 TB
Weight | 3.5 Lbs.
Battery life | 4.5 Hrs.
Pros | Very light .
Pros | The AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics should be enough for CAD work and light to medeum gaming.
Pros | Decent battery life .
Cons | The speakers are really low.
Cons | the 128 GB SSD is a little small but you can replace it.
Cons | Not the best build qualty .

u/AStorms13 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would not buy that. There is no reason for 32GB of ram. If there is you'd be buying a much higher end system with better specs overall. Make sure it has at least a 1080p panel as well. That screen will not look good. Check out the ASUS F512 and Lenovo 530s. Also the Lenovo S340 seems to be a good deal between 500 and 600 (depending on specs obviously). But filter Newegg and other sites looking for similar specs at similar prices and pick what you like. Also, the ASUS can be upgraded to 12GB of ram (buy an 8GB stick and install yourself; 4GB permanently installed), and the 530s can be upgraded to 16GB (buy 2 8GB sticks).

What are some good and cheap laptops for school and light gaming? My budget is around $600 USD, but I want to spend as little as possible.

I’m currently looking at the ASUS VivoBook 15 or the Acer Aspire 5.

League of legends is extremely easy to run. If you're fine playing on medium settings than integrated graphics will still work quite well. Anything form the Lenovo Flex / Vivobook 15 or above would work quite well.

u/Efficient_Nihilist · 1 pointr/blackfriday

Bought it a year ago so can't find that exact one anymore, but you can find one with better specs (ex: a vega 8 or so) for like $450-550 pre-tax.

Looking up "vega 8" on Amazon showed this laptop for cheaper and it's objectively better - and that's just the first result.

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-R5-3500U-Graphics-F512DA-EB51/dp/B07QQB7552/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=vega+8+laptop&qid=1574971922&sr=8-3

Again, first result I looked at. Can probably find better at that price if you look around. You definitely can do better than a intel hd 6000 with an 128gb SSD at $679.

Would this be a better option with the dedicated graphics?

u/chocolateteas · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Unless some great Black Friday deal comes in the next 2 weeks, I think I'll be getting the Asus VIvobook 15 . Only 8 GB of RAM, but easily upgradable. Fits all of the specs I think I need.

u/JagSKX · 1 pointr/laptops

In terms of playing games that laptop would be considered a crippling power downgrade because it only has an Intel UHD 620 graphics core. Good enough Minecraft I suppose, but despite being an old game, Morrowind does not run well on Intel graphics for some reason. Granted, I tested it on a 4th gen i5-4200u CPU with an Intel HD 4400 graphics core. But while Skyrim ran smoothly enough to play, Morrowind was pretty much unplayable with frame rates about half of Skyrim.

---------------------------------------------

The following Asus Vivobook laptops with a AMD Ryzen 5 3500u is more suited for gaming and is less expensive than the Asus Vivobook with the Core i7 CPU. In terms of processing performance the i7 would be better. The Acer Nitro 5's CPU is the most powerful of the three laptops though. The Radeon RX Vega 8 integrated graphics core is a significant improvement over the Intel UHD 620; it is about the same as a nVidia 940m dedicated GPU. However, it's performance is far short of the GTX 1050. But it should be more than enough to play Morrowind.

In that case, the ASUS Vivobook 15 F512DA is a good option.

u/koningdied · 1 pointr/laptops

for that kinda stuff, you dont need a 900 dollar laptop. A surface go with an i5 with 8 gigs of ram will do. I reccomend this device cous you say couler accuratie is realy important to you and the screen of the surface devices are realy good. also you say that you want to take notes on it for scool. On these things you can write realy easy. But if you dont want a tablet like divice (it runs a full windows version) the vivobook and lenovo flex are realy good options. These are cheaper as well.

Here are some links.

u/opckieran · 1 pointr/LaptopDeals

I found this for $550. It has a 15.6 inch screen which is probably a bit bulky to rest in your lap, but it should fit your use case and allow you some decent entry-level performance in games. 3.5lbs (according to the listing).

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-R5-3500U-Graphics-F512DA-EB51/dp/B07QQB7552/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=laptop+lightweight&qid=1570724482&sr=8-16

u/LonerIM2 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

So it is not that big of a difference between 3.5 and 4 lbs, but if you are going to game then between the two I would go with this one better value for money and better GPU.

u/tigerbreak · 1 pointr/laptops

Neither are great for your application, but the Ryzen will be better in this case. See if you can pickup a 3rd generation Ryzen (sometimes the Ryzen 5 models go on sale) for the best budget results in the < 500$ range.

Ryzen 5 Vivobook, good choice.

Ryzen 5 Ideapad, decent choice

Refurbed Aspire Ryzen 5, budget choice

I ended up getting [this] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QQB7552/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_FXjlDbPHBK0W4). I was worried about it being 15 inches and being too big but I got it at a great price (470) and I actually like it a lot. It's not too big and it's a little on the heavier side but it's not really that bad. Thanks for asking!

Hey, thanks again for your help. I noticed that this laptop is on sale today for Prime Day, but I'm struggling to figure out if this is the same thing as the VivoBook 15 F512 and F510 that you mentioned.

Thoughts?

u/Haeges · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Hey,

I think this Asus Vivobook 15 is your best choice.

For 470 $ you get:

  • AMD Quad-core R5-3500U CPU
  • 8GB RAM
  • 256 GB SSD
  • Vega 8 Graphics

It can ship to Denmark. The Vega 8 Graphics are more powerful than the regular Intel integrated graphics and should easily provide a smooth gaming experience for the Sims 4.

Would you pick that Acer over this ASUS VivoBook?

u/Reddit_Ben · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Thanks for the response! Is this not the Vivobook (newer model) you recommend?
