Otherwise, I'd say go with the Vivobook E403SA, but don't expect incredible rendering performance.

Probably the best bang for your buck under $400 is the new Asus E403. Thin, lightweight, with a 1080p screen, quad core processor, 4GB RAM, AC wifi, and 128GB flash storage. Laptop Magazine gave it an editor's choice award.

You'd be best with this Asus E403SA.

it's light, its inexpensive, has a 1080p display and gets good battery life. if you need additional storage, I would just suggest getting an external drive and you'd still stay right around your budget.

I think your perfect option is the Asus Vivobook for $370. Has great value, specs just fine for what you are using it for, and an HD screen.

This is what I have. And I can't bring myself to play on here. It's just too slow. I would definitely reccomend getting something with a bit of a better CPU.

Consider this ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 which matches just about all your requirements. It is right within your budget range, fit your physical requirements in terms of weight and size as well as it is pretty powerful and can definitely manage the tasks you will be doing. It has a nice 1920*1080 screen resolution , a decent processor etc and can last over 10 hours on battery.

buy anything that has atleast 4gigs ram and a decent cpu, like any 2 core celeron would make it. then just buy some 500gig ssd for 30-50$ and replace the hard drive in the laptop. there you go you got a good fast laptop. this would also improve the bettery life as ssd eats less.

if you can find, have a look on Asus e403sa. This one . it has a eMMC drive is which a like 10-15% slower than the first ssd's ( 400mb/s read/write ), but it has 4gb ddr, 14h battery life and only 3,3lbs.

the feeling is quality, metallic, but its actually quite cheap parts, we have it for 2 years and it works.

If you only need it to have a portable laptop, this is your choice.

Have you looked into a Chromebook if all you're using it for is videos, internet and cloud storage? I'd personally go with an Acer Chromebook 14; aluminum build quality and 1080p IPS display. Very hard to beat for the price.

If you must have something that is Windows, then I'd go with this if battery life is a top concern.

If you could get a 13 inches machine ? If you could, get this ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21 laptop.

At that price range, I would recommend the e403SA.
It has a very good battery life, nice metal build, pretty good touch pad, and a 1080p display.

I've been looking into a similar size laptop/2in1's and found these. Both are touchscreen.

HP Spectre x2 (12 inch screen, 0.5in thick with the keyboard and 0.3 without, and under 2 pounds without the keyboard). Can be found refurbished for around 430.

Dell Inspiron i7359-1145SLV 13.3 Inch seems quite decent as well and can be upped to an i5 but will run $520 then. I'm not thrilled about the lack of an SSD, but you might not care.

Since specs don't really matter in this situation I think you should consider two factors - portability and screen. Even if he's just going to take it to the coffeeshop once or twice, you want it to be comfortable - light, beautiful, small and make sure it doesn't take up a lot of space. Generally lower end laptops just don't consume that much power so you're covered for battery. And a 1080p screen would be nice for watching some videos, enjoying sharp text etc.

13-14" is the perfect size for portability and comfort. If you think a bigger screen is best, go for 15-17".

Given that he needs a lightweight laptop on that budget, I'd probably go with something like this. - Runs Windows out of the box, more storage space than the base model Surface Pro 3, and the weight of a Chromebook.

He should check and see if there are any specific requirements for the courses, though. For instance, if he needs to do a lot of virtualization a $400 laptop isn't going to cut it.

Gonna preface this comment with how I am biased towards a ThinkPad, as I love my t430 (slightly larger version of the x230). Honestly, the biggest increase in PC in the past couple of years has been how they have become more power efficient and have better screens, not really performance increases, which is why I kind of laugh at the kind of people who scoff at the idea of upgrading an older laptop. Honestly, unless you need the AC wireless and other features that devs have done on the x220, I'd get a x230, as Ivy ridge has better power consumption, and they come with USB 3 standard. I picked up the Asus E403SA for $380. It has a 128 GB hard drive, 4 GBs of Ram, and a 13 inch 1080p screen. It's not the fastest machine but it's damn decent.

There is an issue with the Bluetooth that with some digging can be fixed in Linux, but I simply disabled it and it runs smoothly.

Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I think a lot of others could find this laptop useful.

you need a laptop with maybe an i3 -i5 processor, at least 4gb of ram memory and a nice screen resolution. this asus maybe just the right choice for you it has a gpu and and i3 cpu and a very nice screen resolution for all your HD netflix movies

Okay great. I have 1 last question for you. I found another laptop but I dont exactly understand how eMMC works. It is on clearance for 369 which helps with the price and it is really light. It has a 1080p monitor and it seems nice. Would this be a decent laptop? This one is with the 3700 processor but they have a similar one with the 3710 but half the memory.
