If you're open to Windows laptops, there are tons that would be a great fit.
This one here is ~$1600 and has a great design plus similar or better specs than a base MB Pro for a lot less money.

Have a look at the ASUS ZenBookUX433FN is a good option to get in your budget. It has a dedicated graphics card which might come in handy for some programs although you won't be gaming. It has a good build quality so you can take it from class to class without worrying that it will break after a few bumps. Additionally, it has a good battery life so no need to walk with your charger unless you plan to game at school

I would probably look at the 14 inch Zenbook over the 13. I don't think there's a configuration for the 13 inch that has a video card, 16 gigs of ram, and an i7.
