In The Long Halloween, it was pretty clear that batman, harvey dent, and commissioner gordon were all pretty good friends because of the work/plotting they did together. Gordon and Batman were crushed that Dent fell so far-- which is basically what Nolan's The Dark Knight was trying to portray in its second half. If I had to chose one batman comic for people to read, it would be The Long Halloween. I also love Tim Sale's artwork.

Agreed on everything. But for the sake of walter7mm (who seems to be a newbie comic book reader), here is links to the amazon product page for each suggestion:

Batman: The Long Halloween was/is my favorite so far.

Many people suggest Batman: The Dark Knight Returns as amazing. I thought It was ok; the (dated) art style kept taking me out of the story

There's a pretty good Batman trilogy: Haunted Knight, The Long Halloween, and Dark Victory. It has more of the Gotham crime families in two of them, which is interesting. Also, I liked Frank Miller's Batman: Year One a lot.

If you also like graphic novels that aren't really "comics", I recommend Asterios Polyp (a man examines his life and a failing relationship through architecture and design), Maus I and II (a story about a Jewish family in the holocaust depicted as mice) and Persepolis (a memoir of a woman who grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution).

And by all means, for sure, read the Sandman books.

Serials? Probably not.

But I've greatly enjoyed several self contained books, or short run serials in a collected form:

Your local comics shop will probably have it, since it's a newb favorite (note that the regulars might snicker at you for the same reason...)

  1. Thrown together? You obviously have yet to see Memento. Check the writing credit wink wink nudge nudge.

  2. If you understand the properties of character development, you should recognize that the sole purpose of introducing a new female heroine in the first place was to carry the emotional weight of her death at the hands of the Joker. Reason being, to erase the dynamic of Batman and the Joker tied together by Batman's parents being murdered by the Joker ( Tim Burton, 89). I estimated it would flourish the dichotomy of both characters without sacrificing the mythology. Subsequently, I posted my hypothesis on a Myspace board in '05 and the only response I got was being called a fag.

  3. True, but your assuming that more than symbolizing the death of Harvey Dent, he died altogether. There's not much proof to that argument other than interviews.

  4. U - r - a - F**khead. I would argue that the film captured the Joker's overall ideology perfectly, I feel it also honored the mythology in showing the extremities and pushing the limits to where the character could go. However, Cilian is fantastic.

  5. Buy this. For as low as $9.00 terrible fucking shit-tastic American dollars, you not only learn it wasn't a cheap trick, but you'll read one of the best stories of Batman since Denny O'Neil.

  6. Sounds like a case of dysphoria to me.

  7. You say that but yet our American Government can trace anyone with a cell phone on their person, regardless if turned off or not in use. It's a fact, but I don't feel the need to post a source because you post like your preparing for your future divorce.

  8. If and only if your argument is valid ( I disagree ), Batman kills in Returns. Does Batman kill in TDK? No.
