I have kids who are Nerf Dart age, and I have to say:
There are two better options than the Nerf.
Boomco and These bootleg Laser Tag guns.
Both are pretty darn fun, and the laser tag guns are nice because there are no darts to clean up, plus there is less opportunity for "I hit you!"/"Nuh-uh!" arguments.
