I hate having a crate however I find it's the only real sleep our dog gets. There's four in our house and he is always moving around otherwise. We keep the create on the main floor away from the rooms.

Our dogs LOVE these donut cuddler beds: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MV0IX66/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wloACbTKB4JX1 (we have the 23x23" one for a 17lb and a 35lb dog ~beagle-sized) - they are super picky about beds and have flat out rejected others.
They also love denta stix and flexi jerky (science diet) treats. I found a simple recipe for dog treats that they enjoyed, and they love "silk balls" or fat balls which are a treat you make out of ground beef, peanut butter, oatmeal, cream cheese, wheat germ, etc. - lots of recipes on Google. I don't always include the ground beef, and I freeze big batches so I can thaw a few each day.
