It depends how much you want to spend. If your mom will literally only be using the phone in emergencies and expects to call less than 20 minutes, send less than 50 messages per month, and use no data 7-11 is great because of the yearly expiry on the vouchers. However once you get into monthly no-contact it is often not the most affordable plan, especially surrounding data. The 100 min talk and unlimited text for $20 is OK but better value can be had on promo plans from Koodo, Virgin, Costco, etc. For smartphones, an unlocked phone from Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, because the ones coming from 7-11 are generally cheaper there, as well you'll get something better for the price. I'd recommend this phone for a first time smartphone because of its large battery and price point. This one if you want something a little cheaper or just buy used. Make sure you don't buy a smartphone with less than 1GB ram otherwise it'll bog down the moment she tries to do anything other than basic phone stuff. If you're just looking for a basic phone with no smartphone features wait until 7-11 has the free phone with $100 airtime deal. They will only make calls and send texts. Otherwise buying unlocked will always be cheaper than buying from a provider in this case.

So I might be finally getting my first smartphone (yeah, I know), through the lifeline program with Tag Mobile. From the looks of it, they'll likely send me a Blu Dash Jr D141w which is obviously garbage. But hey, free. Instead, I'd like to buy a cheap (less than or around $100 or so) unlocked phone to pop the sim into instead.

I've been considering a higher-end Blu phone, like the Energy X 2 or the Studio Selfie 2. Am I missing something completely obvious, given my lack of experience with smart phones in general?

My main concerns are battery life, having the thing not lag/be slow, and being able to stay updated for security updates and to not get left behind on the OS updates (my old ipod touch is on a super old version and can't download apps anymore, I'd like to avoid something like that).

Thoughts?
