First, there are lots of weird Asian candies. For my purposes, I am referencing this one which is a chewy, rice paper wrapped candy. It was one of my favorites growing up.
"Yatta!" shouted the girl on James' secondary computer screen as she flashed a peace sign and a million dollar smile. James shifted his attention from Diablo III to see a young girl, no more than 15 years old, dressed in a Lolita fashion style holding a golden ticket up to the TV cameras for the Japanese new channel. The ticket was printed on translucent rice paper with an iridescent gold sheen and flecks of goldleaf scattered throughout.

It was the 4th ticket. There was only one more in in circulation. All across Japan, golden tickets were circulating in boxes of Botan rice candy. No one outside of Japan had found one yet, though members of select enclaves had them shipped to the United States and Europe. James had bought several thousand boxes of Botan Rice Candy for this purpose. It helped that he had always liked this candy anyway. The wrapper was rice paper, so it dissolved on the tongue. Since he never needed to unwrap the candy, he never had to take his eyes off his computer screen or video games. It was almost as convenient as a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme.

He eyed the girl on the screen, liking her Lolita style but imagining her in her regular school uniform instead. She was on the screen far too briefly before they began scrolling through photos of the previous winners. The first winner had been a 10 year old boy. The news showed stock footage of a boy in a school uniform with his classmates looking toward the cameras excitedly. The second winner had been a 17 year old girl with long black hair and legs that stretched forever. She looked like she came out of an anime, especially with a school uniform that was too tight in all the right places.

The third winner had really spurred James into buying Botan rice candy. His name was Makoto, an otaku type who frequented the Akihabara district in Tokyo. He was 23, right around James' age, and the news refrained from showing much footage of him. In the one shot they ever showed, Makoto seemed to be shrinking under the light of the TV cameras as he clutched a stack of manga to his chest in front of a pachinko parlor. He tried to smile, uncomfortably, but it was painful for him and even more painful for viewers to watch.

After James saw that, he knew he wanted to win that coveted 5th spot. If this contest wasn't just for children, then he had to go. He had to go to Japan, experience the culture that had become his recent obsession, and hopefully meet a cute girl who would find his idiosyncrasies charming. She would look like the girls in anime. She would cook and laugh at his jokes and wouldn't find his Urotsukidoji prints at all disturbing...

Lost in thought, James realized it was already 2pm. It was Wednesday and he had to stop by the comic book shop to peruse their new delivery and sign up for the card tournament happening the following weekend. He dumped the remainder of the box of Botan rice candy in his mouth and left the house without showering.

After browsing the trade paperbacks, manga and new items memorabilia at the shop, James stopped at the counter to pick up the titles they saved for him every week. After chatting with the owner a while, he pointed to James and the mirror on the load bearing pillar, "Hey dude, you got some shit in your teeth. Did you start drinking Goldschlager at 10am?"

"Fuck," James whispered, peering at his empty reflection in the mirror. A tear rolled down his cheek as he picked a single fleck of goldleaf out of his two front teeth. "Fuck..."

Definitely get some better stickers. Those star ones will come off the second you get any sweat on them.

Good places (I know of) to find stickers: conventions with artists selling stuff, japanese botan rice candy
(examples), etsy.com

I have these two (1, 2) from botan rice candy packs on my japanese fender jaguar
