Definitely Brother MFC models. Owned 3 different models, laser and inkjet. Recently brought this model:

And I'm incredibly happy with it: one pass front/rear ADF scanner, duplex printing, fax, WiFi and Ethernet. Works with non original cheap ink cartridges. deb or rpm drivers available. There's also a script which downloads and installs drivers automatically.
This model is a bit expensive because all functions are A3. If you only need A4 you can find several cheap MFC models on Amazon.

Another option is the Brother MFC-6920DW for $199 on Amazon (get $50 off if you are approved for Amazon's Visa card), which is an inkjet printer/scanner/copier/fax machine. This one also does FULL duplex for both scanning & printing, and has a 35-sheet ADF. Also includes USB/Ethernet/Wi-Fi, Apple Airprint and Google Cloud Print.
Since this is a 4-color inkjet, it's inherently less reliable than a good black & white laser printer, but if you must have all the features in one unit this is a good one to consider for your budget. One note, this model has full ledger (11x17") size printing & scanning, which means it might be a larger printer than you expect. Be sure to check the dimensions before purchasing.
