You can read Howard Zinn - just take it with a grain of salt. A People's History of America is terrific, but it's just one . . . extremely cynical . . . perspective. There are other ways of reading the same historical events that don't portray the founding fathers as the corrupt maniacal classist overlords of Howard Zinn's book.
When I was reading it I kept thinking, "I can't wait for the chapter where he acknowledges things are better now than the 1800s and the triangle shirtwaist fire . . ." and it never came. Instead it was more like: did you know Jimmy Carter was actually a conservative monster??? But the whole way through, it's not like he's wrong about the evils of slavery or the "intimate oppression" of women or the injustice of Vietnam or the government's complicity gunning down socialist union organizers or the dubious scruples of 17th century industrialists etc . . .
Like it's not wrong . . . it's just pretty hardcore in it's excoriation of American history.

I would reccomend Gore Vidal's empire series. Especially Burr, and especially given the huge success of Hamilton.
Indeed it did, but not before he managed to become entwined in one of the more Byzantine webs of alleged treason ever. Burr, all in all, was one of the more intriguing characters in American history. For anyone interested in finding out more about him, I highly recommend Gore Vidal's excellent novel, Burr, A Novel -- https://www.amazon.com/Burr-Novel-Gore-Vidal/dp/0375708731. While it's an historical novel, it's well written and fast paced and one of those reads you'll find yourself unwilling to lay down before it's totally read.
