After going through the comments, it sounds like you're going to be a great uncle despite circumstances! There are some awesome suggestions out there.
Concerning diapers and clothes- I'd lean on the smaller side, we had a full term baby girl that was still at to wear newborn clothes for two months and diapers for 6 weeks which was much longer than we anticipated.

I went through a lot. DD was born with a ton of hair so I used one under her head when I nursed in the crook of my elbow because she got really sweaty. It was also the peak of summer heat so even with AC it always was hot. Then one to burp her every feeding.
I just rewashed all of mine in prep for this baby and probably have about 20. U/S shows hair for this one so I imagine it’ll be the same! The tiny ones are useless. I found these to be the right size for us. My mom also embroidered some so we have those as well but the Gerber ones were most practical.
