The kit lens is an 18-55mm. I used the 15-85mm lens.
Hmm, you might be misreading the lens specs: this isn't a generic kit lens. On Amazon, it's $800 new and starts at $250 used, The $250 used is interesting: I didn't realize I could get a secondhand one for roughly the cost of a repair.
I tend to use this lens for travel. I have primes that work for more specific situations, but obviously the zoom is nice since it's versatile. I'd like to keep a standard-length zoom, but I'm not sure if it's best to try to repair this one or just wait and see if I get an EOS-RP.
If that price is too much, just get another lens. Canon makes an excellent bargain telephoto in their 55-250 IS.
However, if you just want to upgrade your kit lens and extend its range a bit, check out the 15-85 on Amazon. It has really good sharpness, range from wide angle to telephoto, and image stabilization. However, it can't be used on a full frame, and it has variable aperture.
EDIT: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is a generally better lens, much faster, and can be purchased with image stabilization. However, it doesn't satisfy your requirement that it has better range than your kit lens.
Good call on the 60D. That is exactly what I have. If you want a good initial lens, I'd forego the kit lens and instead get the canon 15-85. That is, if you want to go with crop format glass. It's what I did and I'm very happy with it. The rest of my lens lineup is vintage Pentax (amazing optics) primes with adapters.
