I have the feeling that there is some content out there somewhere which makes it clear some of the basis for the decision to introduce this ruling and it wasn't necessarily just scriptural (the scripture supported their intent). I'll have to search more for something along those lines.

But, anyway, agreed. It's a absolute going beyond what the bible really says and these guys are guilty of the deaths of those who refuse appropriate treatment because of their stand on this.
