If you search on Amazon.com for Chris Pye, I found all of his books to be excellent. There's some fun ones that a lot of people try too, such as this one here Caring Fantasy & Legend Figures in Wood. The instructions in the fantasy figure one aren't all that great, but the photographs and plans are excellent so sometimes that's as good as you get. IMO the way to start is the Chris Pye books.
