i'm in the same boat as you. cheap cord on xbox mic lasts only a few months. i've been gaming since 1979 and never break my gear. i'm a very meticulous neat-freak. but the flimsy xbox mic cord is just pathetic. and all i want is a chat mic. i have a glorious bose 5.1 surround sound that i prefer to hear.
anywho, this mic will break too (the cord). i'd say they last anywhere from 6-12 months. but it's cheap (in price) and serves it's purpose -- purely for chat. ppl can hear me really clearly. i hear them clearly. and when it breaks, it's just $9-10 to replace. i always keep a new one, unopen box, and when one breaks i open the new one, order another and shelve it.

use that with 3.5mm on the controller or a stereo headset adapter. ive had mine for over a year now and going strong. if it ever breaks then at least its half the cost still.
All the single sided headsets that I purchased for some reason are not true mono as in mono mixing the left and right stereo channels. They just work on the left or right channel only. So there is concern on missing speakers if there are people communicating on one of these channels not being picked up. I purchased this cheap headset from Amazon because I just needed something to put on to hear youtube, etc with a long cord (it's 5 feet) at work and I tested it and it it does not transit one of the channels (I forget which one) so I had to set my PC settings to mono. This set up worked great for me. Again, I am not using the headset for work related uses but I assume they all kind of work this way.
