I don't know anything about her, but after googling her and looking at her site it seems like she gives you lots of videos to try out and see if you like her. Btw I pay $50 + materials for the bird carving course I take, twice a year. So her price of $159 isn't completely unreasonable.
Does she teach the kind of carving you want to do? I.e. In the round with gouges?
Do you have the tools already? If not getting a starter set of gouges going is quite expensive...
I have this book, Chris Pye's Woodcarving Course, and I found it to be excellent for learning in the round work with gouges, but I got more into bird carving and so didn't pursue that style much more past that. The book is excellent, maybe start with something like that?
