To answer you machine question briefly:
The Singer Heavy Duty line of machines is pretty popular in that community, and very affordable. Example project video. I think the models are pretty much the same except for stitch patterns (4423, 4452, etc.) They are not "heavy duty" in the industrial sense, but better than your typical Walmart machine.

A lot of people buy vintage machines (20's through 70's) that are all-metal construction and work great on heavy stuff. That's a bit of a deep dive, though. Do your research, and make sure it works before you buy.

Beyond that, industrial machines. But they're expensive. Start smaller, unless you really want to go spend $1600+ on a professional machine. Sailrite makes some medium-priced portable industrials too, and they have a strong following.
