I find it depends a lot on the species. I always use it for japanese maples, and for most deciduous trees. I don't generally use it for things like juniper. Pines can leak sap like crazy if you don't use it, but you shouldn't prune pine until the fall anyway (the exception being mugo pine).

If you get a tube of this and a tub of this, they'll last you forever. My first tube and tub of these lasted literally about 20 years.

They each are good for different things. I use the clay for larger cuts, and the latex-type paste for smaller things.

Some people don't use paste at all - I happen to like how it works, and how certain trees heal with it, so I use it. After a while, you get a sense for which one to use for which application, and also when to not use it at all.
