The CNET author and most of those commenting on the article seem unaware of how HTTP captive portals work or why they are used. A simple solution would be to carry a common Wi-Fi repeater/adapter; the type commonly used to circumvent per-device charges (Example: http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-All-in-One-Mobile-Companion-DIR-505/dp/B0081TXIQA/). This lets you hook into the hotel's Wi-Fi (or wired Ethernet) and establish your own little in-room network for all your devices. Not ideal, but those little things are handy enough that you should always have one when travelling anyway.
I have this one and love it: http://www.amazon.ca/D-Link-All-in-One-Mobile-Companion-DIR-505/dp/B0081TXIQA
I use one of [these](
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0081TXIQA?pc_redir=1411811984&robot_redir=1).
It has a "repeater mode" where it connects to your hotel/whatever WiFi and the rebroadcasts its own network.
It also has a wired lan port and some USB sharing which I don't use.
Bonus feature of any portable router is that once you connect it to whatever hotel you're at, all of your devices will connect quickly/automatically since its your own router and they're already configured to it.
This is nice for me as I road trip and don't usually stay in the same place twice. Some routers can even be flashed with tomato/ddwrt etc... if you're in to that for bridging to a VPN.
There are quite a few models/brands out there with different features such USB key internet sharing, built in battery power and file sharing.
The USB connection is supposed to be unique, as in happening between only two devices at the same time, not three. But that doesn't mean you can't have your problem solved in a different way.
Your best bet would be a network set up. Networks are meant to connect several devices at the same time, making these files available to them without much effort. Some routers have USB ports to share a pen drive or an external hard drive. But there are other stuff like NAS (network-attached storage) and wireless external hard drives. Some of these stuff even allow you to access your files from the internet!
You probably already have a wireless network in which the computer and the Xbox are connected. You just need something to plug the hard drive into the network as it's own device. I saw a small D-Link repeater with a USB door that probably should do the job: http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-All-in-One-Mobile-Companion-DIR-505/dp/B0081TXIQA
Yup, you're moving up on the geek life. Now you get to set up local networks with remote access for hard drives. Fun stuff. :P
