I'm not fronting that I'm impartial, I'm literally telling you that I prefer Android and explaining why. I'm also saying that I have no problem with people choosing an iPhone for that reason. It's not a bad phone at all, and it works great for many people.

There is no argument to be made that iOS is able to be more freely customized than Android though, that's just objectively not true.

> the Android user base buys Android ... also because everyone tells them the iPhone is good. And so they want to be different and revolt against the perceived Apple circlejerk.

You're generalizing worse than I was here - not once did I think "I'm gonna buy an Android because I wanna be different than those Apple sheeple," and though those people might exist, I can promise you they're not the majority - I'd also argue that it's less likely that an Android user bought a phone because someone told them to and more likely that they a) bought a cheaper Android phone because it was what they could afford, or b) researched it and decided that it had the features that they wanted. Nobody is out there telling the masses that Android phones are better like people do for iPhones.

As far as the expensive ecosystem, you're paying a premium for the name, not the hardware. I can buy a laptop with functionally identical (if slightly better) specs to a Macbook Pro for less than half the price. Macbook Pro ($2399) vs. Dell Gaming Laptop ($979) - although you do get a slightly higher resolution display with the Macbook (it's hard to find an equivalent display in another laptop), that doesn't account for the $1400+ price premium. It's an identical processor, the same amount of memory, actually slightly more storage on the PC, and a marginally better GPU on the PC as well. There's an argument to be made for build quality, but even that has started to become suspect for Apple lately, and PC manufacturers are gaining ground there as well. At the end of the day, the "it's better hardware" argument doesn't really hold much water anymore, especially for their desktops and laptops.

Anyway, all this to say that I make no qualms about preferring the Android/PC ecosystem to Apple because I enjoy the value, customization, and choice I get with those platforms at the expense of (potential) stability issues and other minor differences. I also have no issue with anyone who chooses the other way. I use a MBP for work and it's fine, I bought my girlfriend an iPad because she likes it, I don't hate either of them, I just wouldn't personally choose to buy one for myself. At the end of the day I just like technology, and I like to experience all facets of it - which I generally do in some form or another.

This Dell Gaming Laptop seems to fit exactly what you are looking for where the none edgy design is concerned. it will definitely be able to run the games you mentioned and newer ones without hiccups.

I have no experience with refurbs but this brand new beast is just under $1000.

u/legos45 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Hi,

I would recommend the Dell G3, since it has the i7-8750H processor. I think that is what you need in order to run VMs smoothly. Alongside, it has 16 GB of RAM which should be enough for VMs. Sadly, not as portable as Zenbooks, but I think it is better suited for your work.

If you want other options, take a look at my Black Friday Best Gaming Laptops list, it has a few other options in a similar price range.

u/Elrathias · 2 pointsr/SolidWorks

Solidworks runs well on pretty much anything, and thanks to Visualize replacing photoview 360, it renders pretty well on "pretty much anything" too. Simulations however, is where laptops differ on a major level from a dekstop workstation; a mobile class cpu just does not have the core number and frequency to even be in the same ballpark as the equal desktop cpu.

That being said,

Get an i7, a discrete graphics card, and a ssd.

Don't worry about screen size, its a super cheap upgrade if you find yourself in need of more screen space to get an external monitor, keyboard and mouse to set it up as a workstation at home.

Something like this would probably be ideal, see if you can scroung up a deal online, Extremetech has their weekly deals posted if you hawk that, i dont really know what timeframe you're on but we've got black friday coming up in one month too so...

Its common knowledge that gaming gfx dont perform well in solidworks, but, at this price range, assuming you cant find a 2nd hand och hand me down quadro/fireblade equipped laptop, its better than the build in intel cards.

Solidworks would be the most demanding of the tasks you will be using laptop to complete based on your mentions above. Solidworks itself when run intensively, can be very demanding and require decent specs in a laptop.

In your budget and due to the fact that you want performance, and decent battery life, I would recommend this HP 15.6" OMEN 15-dc0000 15-dc0020nr with the new and powerful 8th gen i7 6 core processor, 12 GB RAM and a solid gtx 1050 ti graphics card. This Dell G7 Gaming Laptop is also a very good pick for the tasks you will be doing and has a less flashy design.

u/ravager1020 · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

This was a good suggestion but the design was a bit much for me. What are your thoughts on this Dell G3 with the 256 GB SSD and i7-8750? Is the G7 any better?

u/MOGZTech · 1 pointr/laptops

The MSI GV62 8RD-200 is without doubt a great option, among the best you will find for that price. But we can do some little more comparison with other brands. The MSI GV62 8RD-200 comes with a 15.6" Full HD display, an Intel Core i5-8300H, GTX 1050Ti graphics card, 8GB RAM, a 16GB Intel Optane Memory + 1TB HDD and retails at around $800.

The Dell Inspiron i5577-7359BLK on the other hand comes with a 15" Full HD display, Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a GTX 1050 graphics card retailing at around $725.

Comparing these two, the Dell has more storage and a better processor and cost less. The MSI on the other hand has a better graphics card.

You can also have a look at the Dell G3579-5965BLK-PUS with a 15.6" FHD, an Intel i5-8300H processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a GTX 1050 graphics card retailing at around $760. This one has an 8th generation processor while the Dell Inspiron above has a 7th Generation processor. The difference is there, but you probably won't notice it much in your day to day work.

Alternatively, you can for for a refurbished machine. Take for instance the Dell G3579-7989BLK-PUS with a 15" FHD, Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050TI retailing at $823. It has better specs than all the others - 8th generation Core i7 processor, a large capacity solid state drive and a 1 TB hard disk drive and a fast GTX 1050Ti graphics card.

However, its good to note that there is a little more risk going for a refurbished machine - in the event the seller experienced an problem with forced them to sell, and the issue never got fully resolved. But you can take your chances.

Your choice will depend on your need. If you need space, then go for one with more space. If you need gaming ability, go for the options with a GTX 1050Ti graphics card. I hope that helps.

il give you specs you’ll want to look for.

8th Gen Intel processor (eg i7-8750H CPU or i5-8300H) they’re great.

and something like a GTX 1050 from nvidia GPU or MX150 from AMD. those will run most games on medium settings at 60FPS
atleast 8GB of RAM

most “gaming” laptops tend to be above $900. i recommend getting a gtx 1060 if you want to play games well for a while. thats about $1200 USD with tax.
The other common GPU is a GTX 1050Ti. its not as good as the 1060 but it plays everything.

i really dont know much about the battery life for laptops, but the HP Omen 15
is a good laptop. may not be a very good school looking laptop, but you’ll want to look at laptop with similar specs.

Dell G3

this is probably the best choice. it has allot of great internals and is about $930USD.
also it doesnt scream gaming red fire death you know?

oh and last thing, you can change the 2.5” drive. typically the “1TB HDD” to anything else with the 2.5” size. it does tend to void the warranty though.

anyway, hope i helped

Is this one similar to that? This was what I was looking at first: First one I checked

u/ChemtrailTechnician · 1 pointr/LaptopDeals

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm wondering what you think of that compared to two Dell offerings?

Dell G3 17.3" Full HD Gaming Laptop, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8300H, 8GB Memory, 128GB SSD+1TB Hard Drive, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Windows 10

Dell Gaming Laptop - 15" FHD, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD+1TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050TI, Windows 10 Home, Black - G3579-7989BLK-PUS

Obviously one is 17 and one is 15.6 so that's a big trade off. The 1060 seems to test quite a bit higher than the 1050 and there are a few differences in processor, RAM, etc. Thoughts?

Again thanks so much for your time.
