I got one of these cheap from a business that was going bankrupt. It's only grayscale, but I can print them easily and it doesn't need ink.

Before that, usually masking tape and a sharpie. Milk and paper works great if you have a laser printer. Water soluble glue sticks (the purple ones, I think) are also a good idea.

We've got a Dymo label maker which connects up to the PC via USB cable. A little pricey, but we're both a bit obsessive about organizing our hobbies.

You can buy small USB roll printers and they will come with the software / templates you need.
