I just picked up one of these. Windows machine, but I've got it dual booting with Linux at the moment. I like it a lot so far. $1,500 for a computer with these specs will be hard to beat... the RTX 2070 is what sold me personally. Nice to have a rig at home now that can handle some of my pytorch experiments.

The only down side, is it's definitely a gamer computer, so... if you want something professional to bring into meetings, this might not be it. The rainbow keyboard is a little l33t for something I'd bring into a meeting, so this would probably need to be a work only rig instead of a presentation rig. For what it's worth, I also really like the mechanical keyboard... haven't gone down that road before, but I have a hard time going back with my corporate laptop now.

I would recommend this Eluktronics mech g2 because it has great combination between value for money, weight, battery life, and performance.
This is the new model with the new RTX card, and there is not a reliable review of it out yet, however, it uses the same chassis so we are expecting similar cons/pros to the older model, with that said here is a review of the old model.
The outer shell is made almost entirely out of metal.
It weighs 4.6lbs which is light since you are a college student and you'll have to carry it around everywhere in your backpack.
Keyboard is mechanical with RGB backlit.
It has 3 USB type A, Ethernet, and mic and headphone jack and on the back an HDMI, and USB type C.

Screen is IPS with 144Hz refresh rate, with impressively small bezels, and a professional design.

Lid can't be open with one hand.

Fans get loud under intensive work, but that is normal with every good gaming laptop.

Plenty of upgrade options as the chassis supports up to 32GB of ram, and 2 SSDs and 1 HDD.

Heat management is great, it can get hot but it gets cool again pretty quickly once the fans kick in.

Main con of the laptop is the trackpad, it is mediocre at best when you compare it to other laptops in the price range.

Battery life during normal usage is around 3.5-4.5 hours and 1.5 hour during gaming.

Speakers are down facing so during gaming, it is best to wear headphone since the fan gets loud during gaming as well.

Hi,

Since it seems like you'll be heavy lifting, I think a gaming device would be the most ideal. The issues you mentioned about the Blade 15 and XPS 15 are very true: QC issues as well as thermal throttling. That is not ideal when running demanding programs. To avoid those issues, the Eluktronics Mech-15 G2R Pro with the new RTX graphics card would be a great option. No QC issues, no thermal throttling, while having even stronger components and staying portable.

The battery life is max 4 hours for light use, which is typical for a gaming laptop. The weight is around 4.5lbs, which is pretty portable. The OS is Windows 10 Home.

The RTX 2070 graphics card + i7-8750H processor is great for those kinds of demanding programs, the new strong graphics card is a great fit for you. The display is also pretty good, a 1080p 15.6" 144Hz IPS display with decent color gamut.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Yes the 15" model has an RTX 2070 Max Q .

This MSI GS65 Stealth THIN-050 would be a great pick for what you need.

It has:

  • Great performance power for average games and will complete your other tasks excellently.

  • Decent build quality

  • Very thin and light weighted

  • Decent battery life

  • Good display

If you will be playing very demanding games, you could go with a more powerful system like this Eluktronics MECH-15 which has a far more powerful graphics card, but lower battery life. It has a good build quality, great display and handles heat very well. You will love its keyboard.

within $2000, you can get The Eluktronics MECH-15 it has a professional design, does not look like a gaming laptop that you prefer and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 GPU, a powerful 6 cores CPU but unfortunately a short battery life and according to your comment you don't care about battery life, so overall it would be a very good option for you.

>Eluktronics Mech

found this guy https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MECH-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07N77H77R/ comparing the two right now. Bumping up to a 17" seems nice

If this is Max-Q, the Eluktronics is better somewhat equal for the same price. More battery, and more SSD space. https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MECH-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07N77H77R. But, no G-Sync.

Edit: G-Sync
