Good point, no sources listed. There aren't too many good sources on this unless you compile a map of all the rivers in the Hudson Bay, Great Lakes, Mississippi, and MacKenzie drainage basins.
However, the history of the North West Company (and later the Hudson Bay Company as they competed in the same areas) has their supply line stretching from Montreal to the Arctic with the longest portage being 9 miles at Grand Portage, MN (Empire of the Bay which was only to get around water falls. I had a whole thing typed out, but check out the Wikipedia article on the Canadian canoe routes instead. It's much more detailed and better sourced.
Thanks sincerely for the recommendation. Based on the single Amazon review, this book seems to be more of a "coffee table" book than a serious read.
I wonder what your thoughts are on the amalgamation of the second and third, more in-depth, books by Newman: Empire of the Bay: The Company of Adventurers that Seized a Continent. From the Amazon reviews, it looks spectacular.
