I'm reposting something I posted a couple of years ago:

Well, perhaps the most famous recent post-apocalyptic novel was McCarthy's The Road. Quite a bleak book, and very characteristic of McCarthy's spartan prose, this became a huge international best seller and a successful Hollywood movie. I certainly recommend it, but it's not really an uplifting book and has several confronting scenes. Still, very good.

The other obvious recent "literary" PA novels would be Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" trilogy. They start with Oryx and Crake, are followed by Year of the Flood and conclude with MaddAddam. These are very good books with strong feminist and ecological themes (a good thing!). Highly recommended.

The Dog Stars is yet another recent PA novel which garnered a fair bit of praise (I picked it up after hearing a segment on the novel on NPR's Fresh Air). I enjoyed it, despite the cliched "Survivalist" aspects and occasional far-fetched coincidences. A good, fun read; especially if you're a dog lover. :)

Other recommended titles (which I won't link to directly for time reasons) include Justin Cronin's The Passage trilogy (kind of a mash up between post apocalypse and horror), Stephen King's The Stand (ditto), A Canticle for Leibowitz, Earth Abides and Alas Babylon (the triptych of classics of the genre).

Good luck. I love these books even though I'm a positive optimistic guy! :)

EDIT: I overlooked Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven (fun, action packed but accused by some of racist undertones), The Postman by David Brin (so so so very much better than the movie it spawned. So much better), The Year of the Plague by someone I forgot (rather original PA novel with nano-technology rearing its head) and even Blood Music by Greg Bear (though most people consider this full on science fiction, it does feature an apocalypse... or a sort. :)

Since then, I've thought of (or read) a few more. Perhaps one of the most famous is Station Eleven. It garnered a fair bit of media attention and mainstream critical acclaim a couple of years ago. It's a bit of a slow burner, and whilst it's not my favourite post-apocalyptic novel, it's certainly worth picking up. The Girl with All the Gifts was a recent hit. Set in the UK, it tells the story of a band of British scientists and soldiers searching for remaining survivors, as they bring along a very strange and very dangerous survivor of the recent plague. It's great fun and was made into a movie recently. I believe the author recently published a sequel (The Boy on the Bridge?), but I haven't read this.

Wastelands is a collection of short-stories. Some really good stuff here, and if you're not feeling up to a full length novel or comptemplating the end of humanity, it's well worth a look.

Let me know if you want more. It's a favourite genre of mine. :)

I studied comp sci, which is an area that has ridiculously good online & free resources available. A college degree is also much less important than a good portfolio/history in CS. Much of my education was supplemented by external pursuits and materials, so I think I'm a decent candidate to speak as a grad in a STEM field that has the least (tie with math?) college requirement.

I do think people in STEM are more likely to use their UG training in a future job though, chiefly because they are more likely to work in that field. This doesn't mean an LA degree doesn't provide a benefit to society at large or help a person live a happier and more satisfied life, but I think it's a difficult argument to make that the murky "critical thinking" skills developed in (hopefully) all higher education are more helpful in a workplace than those same skills cultivated through relevant job knowledge. e.g., I would have had the same broad enrichment in a concrete mathematics class as in an algorithms class, but in an algorithms class I also get an intuition of asymptotic analysis/algorithm that I'll use frequently in a job.

I definitely disagree with the the people you quoted. An argument for non-STEM areas that I don't think has been mentioned is that it isn't easy to change what a person is interested in, or take an uninterested person and keep them motivated. College finds some topic a person can be passionate about and it uses that as leverage to train the person in critical thinking. If you tried to shoehorn a history major into a STEM field I'd assume they'd have a much higher rate of dropping out.

That said, I can understand some of the bias (legitimate or imagined) against some LA areas:

  • Subjectivism can foster mistrust and LA has more subjectivism.
I've seen studies (can't find atm) on discrimination in grading that indicate a teacher will give a different grade if they know the name of the student they're grading.
I took a fun course on 19th Century Women's Literature in which a professor asked me to rewrite a paper. When I met him to hear his criticisms he withdrew them-- he hadn't read my paper in any depth and his complaints demonstrated he didn't even understand my thesis.
After a few experiences where it feels like your feedback is based more on your relationship with your professor/their opinions/their prep, than some external Truth, you can get a bit jaded.

  • Weakness in STEM. Mastery in rhetoric.
Many of the non-STEM people I've known have had very weak math skills / science literacy. Sometimes part of the espoused reasons for choosing their chosen fields was that it didn't require said skills.
This leads to an asymmetry where someone in LA can write a poignant ethnography about some disenfranchised group, or chronicle someone's struggle with aspect X of society so masterfully it feels like the reader went through it... but it can be detached from reality and devoid of real solutions without ancillary understanding of stats/econ/math/etc.
Kony 2012 might be an example of a compelling but misleading narrative, more for ignoring history though. Arguments against global warming would be one for the right wing, arguments against vaccines for both sides, arguments for homeopathy for more of the left.

  • Some of the material/topics seem bunk, some of the value is hard to see immediately.
I've had a friend facilitate a Lit class based on Harry Potter. Before listening to her talk about it I didn't think there was enough depth to warrant such a class, but she convinced me otherwise. Non-STEM people might feel that way about STEM things... like wondering if it's really worth spending millions of $ to study naked mole rats, or worth a PhD for proving that a computers ability to sort a list of numbers has a slightly slower best theoretical time than we thought.
With STEM most (all?) of these topics can eventually be explained and justified. LA can be a deep rabbit hole that terminates in an unsatisfying "well the important thing is that it got you asking these questions".
To give an example, I took a blowoff summer class before REU research. The class was about dreams, and one of the core texts was Mutant Message Down Under -- the tale of a woman who was psychically called to Australia to go on a walkabout/spiritual awakening with a magical aboriginal tribe to convey their message of love & nicethings to the rest of the world (as they were leaving Earth, iirc). There were many red flags for me (such as making an international call from Australia with a "quarter". no such currency there), so I looked up the book. The author had been a door-to-door saleswoman who would use similar stories to help sell her products, and had written a book after receiving encouraging feedback. The woman had possibly been in Australia for a few weeks, but certainly none of the events in the book (supposed to be roughly autobiographical) had happened. The proceeds were supposed to go to a made up charity for the aborigines, who were basically misrepresented as Native Americans.
A group of aboriginal leaders were so offended at the profiteering through misrepresenting their culture that they traveled to the US to confront her. She basically admitted it was made up, but she didn't make good on a promise to publicly clear things up. The book was a NYT bestseller for 31 weeks, a book of the year. Discussed ~25 mins in.
So STEM has more trust that, even if you don't understand it, there is some substance in it. Non-STEM doesn't have that because of the greater subjectivity. The more steps is takes to demonstrate the value of something the harder it is for people to appreciate it, and that task is just harder for LAs unfortunately.

  • Subjectivity encourages personal opinion. If someone is asked if they understand neural networks they'll probably say "no", but everyone has an opinion on women's/men's/race's issues/good literature/etc. Telling someone they need to study these topics has the implication that their opinion is wrong and that they may be acting unethically... that makes people a bit defensive.
There is also probably some resistance to the idea of a professor being the one who shapes/decides those opinions. Even if the purported goal of a class is to bring the topics up for discussion and individual introspection, the selection of materials, the grading, and the tone of the course likely will skew towards the professor's beliefs.

  • Wage differences. I don't think it's legitimate, but I can understand why the Magical Capitalism Fairy saying CS gets paid twice what a LA job would can lead someone to think their education was harder/more needed in society.

  • Different camps. There is a regrettable grouping of "sciencey folks" and "artsy folks" in society (lookin' at you C.P. Snow :\ ). Non-STEM people get shit for not having trade skills and STEM people get shit for being dull/uncultured/dispassionate/lacking social skills/etc. I don't mean to overstate this as being a big problem, but it exists to an extent.

Again, this is said as someone who thinks non-STEM fields are great. Love talking to history/phil/writing folks. Just a quick-- likely incomplete-- list of things I think anyone who doesn't appreciate non-STEM fields would need to have addressed.

I don't need any game of the first giveaway so I just want to enter the secound one with my story:

there were 2 young people, they met eachother in a mmorpg.

he loved playing video games since he was 8. first game was command&conquer:red alert. he still knows it. it was a great time.

but now, he finished school and he was 1 month before finishing his voluntary 1 year military service for his country. for some reason, he aborted it. hey thought: I'm going to go to the university in a month, now I need time for myself to relax before its get going!

so he stayed at home. he started to play world of warcraft again. one week later. he thought this again: damn, I'm going to go to the university in 3 weeks, I have to stop playin! so he aborted his wow-sub. later that day, he was surfing on a warcraftmovies.com (yes -.-) and saw a advertiment about a free2play mmo called atlantica. he clicked on it. few hours later, he was kind addicted again. (yes, again) of course, it belongs to a mmo that you talk to ppl and know new ppl in this way. short after, he found a fellow with whom he played all night long.
but for some reason, they didn't talk much at the beginning, they just ran from a quest to another and so on. one week later, the beta ended. they even did'nt say goodbye.

anther week has passed. the game (atlantica) was launching. of course he was playing it again. without knowing that his fellow was playin, too. at the level of 30, they met again. they even didn't realize this coincidence and played together for another 1 week. this time, they talked much more. they talked about almost everything, and he realized only now that his follow was a girl.

after this one week, he went to the university and stopped play atlantica. but this time. they asked eachother for MSN.

they stayed in contact, went through drama like ex-boyfriend and girlfriend. not knowing that they were hurting eachother.. (for this part, I can tell you a story as long as this book: http://amzn.to/Nx04Ra I know its not the thickest book, but its the longest I have ever read.)

10 months later. he met her where she lived for the first time in real life.

at first, they weren't able to admit this relationship because of every possible difficulties you can think about due to families, age different and so on. also they were afraid that people could think anything bad about this kind of relationship and this kind of getting together..

but since they realized how lucky they were to meet and have each other, they were telling everybody their story how they came together
and this is the story how I met my girlfriend. We are moving together in 2 month after a 2-year long-distance-relationship in my city, Vienna.

as you can see, its all about right decision at the right time and right place. I can't imagine what would have happend if I didn't abort my military service, if I didn't stop playing wow, If I didn't click on that ad, if I ....... But, I don't want to know, I am happy that I did all of it.

as evidence of my story: here is a photo of her gift to me last christmas, its a picture of us she drew and printed on a pillow :) well its too small to sleep on but I love it very much! http://twitpic.com/a9w5b1

now, its your turn :)

Happy birthday!!

A really good book and a first in the seris Viral Nation. It's really good. I couldn't stop reading it. It's a fun read. Here is the Amazon link to the book. Do NOT read the reviews on this book.. There is a lot of spoilers.

It's hard to do a bucket list for others, but I will try my best. Learn a new language! Maybe even american sign language. You never know when it may be useful. Need to lose some weight? Why not add it to the bucket list. Want to be fitter then what you are? (Same idea.) Donate plasma, or blood. Clean the house ROOM by ROOM. Taking everything out of it, and cleaning it top to bottom. Read the local paper and try to find someone's missing pet for them. Free of charge even if the reward is huge. Perhaps learn to play an instrument, or teach someone else! Feed the birds in the park, watch a sunrise, learn to draw... I'm just spouting ideas now.

u/chandler-blackshadow · 5 pointsr/WritingPrompts

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking on this sub for a few weeks now, posted a couple of responses to Prompts. Maybe it's about time I introduced myself...

I'm Mark Chandler. I live in the UK with my wife, sprog and dog. I work full-time, and for as long as I can remember, I have loved reading. I get so immersed in books, worlds, characters, places - I love it. I think it's for that reason that I decided that I wanted to write a book.

In 2009, I finally finished editing my teen novel, and published it. That was the teen novel that had been bouncing around my head for around ten years! I had written bits and bobs down over that time, but then sometime in 2008, I knuckled down and went from "idea-in-the-head" to "written-down".

I type faster than I can write, and my handwriting is atrocious - I'll write a paragraph and then can't even decipher it myself ten minutes later! So my go-to method is straight onto MS Word. Write, write, write, and then read it over and edit. Finish a chapter, read it over, edit.

I now have another novel on the go. I'm about twelve chapters in, have a rough outline of the entire plot, and keep chipping away at it. Hopefully I'll get that one done and dusted in less than ten years though!

I'm also working on a short story. An idea popped into my head not so long ago - what would happen if you suddenly lost ten years' worth of memories? Maybe not so big a deal? Maybe it is... So I began a short story, and am currently six parts deep in that.

Yesterday, I bit the bullet. I created my own sub. Gah!

So if you want to take a look at my WP responses so far, or catch a look at Part One of Ten Year's Gone, you can head over to /r/MarkChandler

Finally, if you did want to look at the novel, it's up on Amazon. For some reason, Amazon have the wrong book cover for the paperback (it's the original image that I had created for me, until someone pointed out that it was actually a Mortal Kombat (maybe?) character, so I had it changed), but the image for the Kindle version is correct.

BTW, I love this sub!

EDIT: Here's a pic of my and my book, which I submitted to /r/pics a few years back, before I knew that this sub even existed!

u/Streetmix · 2 pointsr/rage

Dozois's Year's Best Sience Fiction is a good compilation of short fictions. This year's was especially great. I like my science fiction idea-based, exploring concepts and hypotheticals, and I thing the short-story format really lends itself to that.
Rudy Rucker keeps publishing great novels.
By other authors, Nod and 2312 were both very worth my time. Intrusion was excellent, The Dog Stars was excellent, there is just a lot of good books published if you look around for them.

u/__Millz__ · 3 pointsr/Fantasy

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie is my favorite. Very dark and gritty, there is no question how badass Monza is, she could take out any male lead with her shear determination

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley is much lighter but I fell in love with it a young age and it’s still a great read

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence is my most recent favorite. Nona is a fantastic character, her flaws make her real and you root for her so much. I’m so pissed I have to wait a year for the final book when it’s already been finished but no doubt I will be reading it the moment it comes out in April of 2019

Also thanks for asking this question, love finding new books with strong female leads

u/fracto73 · 5 pointsr/needadvice

This would really depend on your tastes.

I like to recommend The Dresden Files. The link goes to the first book in the series, and the first chapter is available on that page to see if it is something you might enjoy.

Also I liked The Golden Compass. Don't dismiss this book because it is for young readers anymore than you would dismiss a pixar movie. They are still enjoyable for adults, a good story is a good story.

If the fantasy stories aren't your thing, Hunt for the Red October is a fun read. It is also the gateway to a bunch of other novels from Tom Clancy. These are more suspenseful/action driven stories.

My preferences are mostly in the direction of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, so if you would like more things along that path I'd be happy to offer more suggestions.

u/rroses- · 0 pointsr/booksuggestions

I studied abroad a few years ago in Melbourne too, and I read Mutant Down Under by Marlo Morgan on the plane and it changed my experience. Hereis a link to the book on Amazon. It's about the Aboriginals, so not specific to Melbourne, but going in I didn't have much knowledge and I feel like it really opened my eyes and allowed me to appreciate the history and culture even more than I would have. It's a short story and really worth the read imo.

Also, if you have any other random questions about studying abroad in Melbourne I'm happy to answer any I can (:

u/Swift_Reposte · 3 pointsr/booksuggestions

Check out Drood by Dan Simmons. I picked it up on a whim, and couldn't be happier that I gave it a chance. It's a total trip, and suspenseful in a laid-back / behind-the-scenes sort of way.

Also, I find anything by Michael Chrichton to be utterly "un-put-downable". I'd recommend starting with Congo or Prey, but definitely give Sphere a shot before you move on.

Edit: Sorry I meant Micro instead of Prey. Prey was "meh" but Micro is great. Also definitely check out Timeline! (Sorry, I'm basically obsessed with Chrichton)

Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, is another favorite of mine. But, it's been so long since I last read it that I can't really remember why. I'm going to be rereading that one again soon.

u/KaiLung · 2 pointsr/TheFirstLaw

Thanks.

Not sure if there are exact "inspirations" for the images, by they definitely have a familiar look to them, maybe partly because it's a more standard/generic fantasy cover style.

However, I actually like that drawing better than the official ones to date (i.e. the Subterranean Press cover and a cover Tor.com did for one of the stories). Because of the more humorous tone of the stories, I don't really think a grimdark look for those particular characters makes sense, and despite the "grimdark" tone of the series in general, the look of the characters should be fantasy/Baroque Europe, not 90's dystopia, and if they are wearing leather, it's like "boiled leather", not bondage gear. So like Monza should look like this- https://www.joeabercrombie.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/best-served-cold-us-ltd.jpg, not like this- http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0316044962.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg.

u/snyper7 · 2 pointsr/gaybros

I just started Wool (view the "trailer"), which has been really great. I've also been reading The Extraordinary Tale of Nicholas Pierce which has been a fun read and re-reading Our Time which I very strongly recommend - it's a very touching collection of personal stories about time in the military under DADT. Getting a Kindle was a good decision.

Hi Team,

Thanks for this opportunity! My name is Josh Francis, I live in Australia and I'm just starting my self-publishing career.

I am a former soldier so I write about what I know!

I have written two books thus far, one called Battle Rhythm (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V6827HD), which is a military influenced time-management book, as well as a military thriller short story called Pegasus (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZJ2X654) about an intelligence operative that gets called back into service and uncovers a global conspiracy.

Sequels to both of these books (Both are the first of a series) will be out by the end of the year.

Both e-books are priced at 0.99c on Amazon right now! I appreciate any feedback, and would love people to join my fledgling readers group (https://www.red-diamond.com.au/books)

Many thanks!

Josh

I've never delved too deep into the classics but a more modern pick is Peter Heller's 'The Dog Stars'

“A dreamy, postapocalyptic love letter to things of beauty, big and small.” –Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

“A book that rests easily on shelves with Dean Koontz, Jack London or Hemingway." —The Missourian

u/missprecocious · 2 pointsr/AskTrollX

Any from the India Black series. Madam Troll extraordinaire. Big on ladies kicking ass and having fun doing it. Easy read, good stories. And no, they are not romance novels, they are mysteries!

> "Readers will enjoy this impressive debut novel, which provides a colorful portrait of Victorian society as seen through the eyes of a strong, intelligent woman."

u/camp45 · 3 pointsr/booksuggestions

I recommend the novel The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. About a post apocalyptic world where a guy and his dog have a small plane and survive in and around the mountains of Colorado.

Just thought of some non-fiction as well, that also parallels the sailing aspect of Robinson Crusoe. The Greatest Sailing Stories Ever Told. Not all of the are survival, but quite a few are. I enjoyed them all!

There are also loads of other books about survival in the world wars as well as other wars. I am sure with some digging several good ones could be found.

Lastly, as said above, Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild is another great non-fiction recounting of survival in the world, not just the Alaskan wilderness.

Sounds suspiciously like "The Dog Stars" by Peter Heller

>Adventure writer Peter Heller’s The Dog Stars is a first novel set in Colorado after a superflu has culled most of humanity. A man named Hig lives in a former airport community—McMansions built along the edge of a runway—which he shares with his 1956 Cessna, his dog, and a slightly untrustworthy survivalist. He spends his days flying the perimeter, looking out for intruders and thinking about the things he’s lost—his deceased wife, the nearly extinct trout he loved to fish. When a distant beacon sparks in him the realization that something better might be out there, it’s only a matter of time before he goes searching. Poetic, thoughtful, transformative, this novel is a rare combination of the literary and highly readable.

u/Talmun · 2 pointsr/AskMenOver30

Highly recommend the following series:
https://www.amazon.com/Are-Legion-Bob-Bobiverse-Book-ebook/dp/B01LWAESYQ

It’s fun, it’s an easy read, but it’s not simplistic.

Also huge recommendation for these two books:
https://www.amazon.com/14-Peter-Clines/dp/1618680528

https://www.amazon.com/Fold-Novel-Peter-Clines-ebook/dp/B00NDTS7NC

Again, fun, easy to read and a blast to re-read.

Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. "Medievalesque" fantasy set in a far future. Main character Jorg is a right bastard, but he grows on you.

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie, . Grimdark fantasy, short on magic and long on swords. Abercrombie is great at characters and action scenes. There are several books set in this world; I think this standalone is the best introduction.

[The dog stars - Peter Heller](https://www.amazon.com/ -Stars-Vintage-Contemporaries/dp/0307950476) Fantastic Story. Man and his dog surviving post super flu. I personally will read pretty much any post apocalypse fiction, but this is up there with The Road in quality. Beautifully written.

Hild by Nicola Griffith. There is at least 1 sequel planned. This is a historical novel, but it reads like a fantasy, since it's set in 7th century England, and the main character has a special skill that sets her apart.

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie. Read the Amazon "Look Inside" preview.

Thanks sincerely for the recommendation. Based on the single Amazon review, this book seems to be more of a "coffee table" book than a serious read.

I wonder what your thoughts are on the amalgamation of the second and third, more in-depth, books by Newman: Empire of the Bay: The Company of Adventurers that Seized a Continent. From the Amazon reviews, it looks spectacular.

Edit: At $1.99 on Amazon, I went ahead and purchased it.

Sirens of Titan makes me feel very not dead inside.

Rant by Palahniuk might also fit the bill, it's dark and weird and some sci-fi elements.

I just read The Dog Stars, it was very good.

Maybe this thread from a while back will have some good suggestions for you.
