I can't comment on what might be causing it, but as a chronic teeth grinder who has to wear a mouth guard, I ended up buying some "sensory" "chew" necklaces for use during the day. These look pretty non-descript, and holding it in my teeth keeps me from clenching down:

They come in a lot of styles and colors, and are pretty cheap. When I am working at home at my desk (alone) I use one of the ones below, which are a couple of inches across:
