I'd recommend Good Book: The Bizarre, Hilarious, Disturbing, Marvelous, and Inspiring Things I Learned When I Read Every Single Word of the Bible by David Plotz. It helps make some sense of the archaic writing. And the rest of the time, it talks about all the stuff that straight up makes no sense.

It's only the Old Testament, but [this book] (http://smile.amazon.com/Good-Book-Hilarious-Disturbing-Marvelous-ebook/dp/B001TKD4VC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1421367610&sr=8-3&keywords=the+good+book) pretty much consists of a comedian irreverently going through the Bible for the first time in his life. It is damned funny and worth the read, especially if you're considering the task as well.
