The main source for this article is Matt Hucke & Ursula Bielski's excellent book, Graveyards of Chicago.
Druid Society. Lots of them in IL. You might like this, Graveyards of Chicago
Try the Chicago Cultural Center and check out its domes. Flippin gorgeous and sadly many tourists miss it.
What kind of history are you looking for? If you're looking for something outside of a museum, check out Pullman where a lot of shit went down. Also check out the Hull House.
Another thing tourists miss are the cemeteries. If you want to learn some legit history about Chicago and see where a lot of its famous folks are buried (Marshall Field, Roger Ebert, George Pullman, Mies van der Rohe, the Palmers, etc.) check out Graceland Cemetery. This book can come in handy or go on an awesome cemetery or ghost tour.
Or whatever, just go visit the Bean in Millenium. That's nice too.
I love Graveyards of Chicago! It is great for day trips and random outings to city cemeteries and city history.
