I enjoyed Gretzky's discussion of this in his autobiography. As I remember it, he tried take after take of saying "Bo knows hockey" but the director didn't how he was saying it and both Gretzky and the director grew more and more agitated as they tried take after take after take. Finally, the exasperated director told him to just skate up and say "no." When Gretzky did, he (Gretzky) thought he blew it again and was so sick of the whole thing he just wanted to leave. The director, however, loved the way he said "no" and excitedly yelled, "That's it!" or something.
Not a documentary but if you're into reading things there's an autobiography published in the early 90s, not long after he was traded to the Kings.
It was really good, and you get a good idea of how he grew up and became so dominant.
