You could try breaking them into quarters. Leftover foods can cause an ammonia spike. Noticeable in smaller tanks, less so in larger tanks.

I use Hakari sinking wafers and they're about a quarter the size of that one. They also don't last long and start to dissolve when they become water-logged. Snails take care of whatever my BN plecos don't.

I feed these for my cories. They'd be too big for the betta to eat completely, but it may still be possible for him to take bites. You could also try burying the food in the sand a bit so only the cories can find them:

You don't need to remove fish during pwcs. If anything it freaks em out. The Cories don't have to have live plants. But live plants do offset Nitrates. But, Cories definitely need a group of at least 5 or 6. Full size Cories would be too big for a ten gallon. Here's the thing, I would suggest getting 6 DWARF Corydoras habrosus. They only get 3/4 of an inch for the males and some of the females will get about an inch and a quarter.

BUT not all Bettas will tolerate tank mates. So, you would have to be prepared where to put either of them if it doesn't work...does it mean having a separate tank already cycled just in case? Or returning the Cories to the store? They will take them but they won't give you your money back.

One option if you decide to go ahead and are prepared for one of the above options, is take your Betta out of his tank for the day or so. Put the DWARF Cories in after you acclimate them properly (make sure you do this/ask or look it up). THEN put the Betta back afterwards.(I wouldn't even let him watch you lol ) This way the Betta is less likely to see them as interlopers into his territory.

Feeding your Cory is important, to feed them an appropriate diet. Food/sinking pellets for bottom dwellers like catfish. You can feed or 1-2 a day/it depends because there won't be any food for them to pick off the bottom living with a Betta, so you'll have to judge how it goes.

BTW, I've emphasizing DWARF because some of the other Cories get pretty big.

Now EVERYONE will say they need groups, but I will say that once I got roped into taking 2 Corydoras aenus albino ones and they were completely fine! It's not ideal though. (I think those albinos though just seem to be tougher ??? ) They were in a ten gallon. If you can't find the dwarf you could get these. I'll get yelled at for suggesting though...

Oh yes most reliable accurate site for species info is SeriouslyFish.com I don't use other sites at all really, only as supplements.

Cory's were added a couple months ago and the betta was mostly fine with them and not acting weird like he is now, so I don't think it's anything they brought into the tank.

However, now that I think about it I forgot that I did add some different food to the tank recently. I tried some smaller Hikari pellets for the betta because the rasboras can be like piranhas at times and would occasionally steal the bigger Zoo Med betta pellets I have which are WAY too big for them if the betta was slow on grabbing it.

Ugh... my memory is bad I completely forgot about the new food. I don't feed them any frozen food (sorry boys). On a regular basis it was usually just TetraMin Tropical Flakes for the rasboras, Zoo Med Betta pellets (2-3 pellets 2x daily), and Hikari sinking wafers for the Cory's. The Hikari Betta Bio-Gold pellets were the only recent experiment. If it's possibly from food, that would likely be the culprit.
